None of the above?

Pick up some Audio-Technica ATH-A500/700/900 or the Beyerdynamic DT-770s. I would say grab the A500s and a sound card (should be able to get them and an X-Fi Xtreme Gamer for about $150).

The Logitech Z-5300 are probably the lowest I'd go for speakers (~$130).

Definitely the speakers. Z-5500s are amazing. If you're looking to spend less than about $200 or so get some X-530s from Logitech they're solid.

i got these cheap ass $15 sony headphones like 8 years ago, and i love them!

i have small ears so i hate headphones that rest on them

these headphones are big enough to encompass them and make a pseudo-surround sound

MDR-CD180

Headphones.

Not only is the sound quality much cheaper, but you can blast your phones at any level without the booms bothering your roomates.

A win/win situation.

At 3 in the morning the neighbors prefer headphones!!! duhh

For gaming? Well I only play WoW pretty much and I turned off all sound, so really nothing gaming-wise. Unless you consider voice-com, which I use a Plantronics Headset (one of the few pairs I found that I actually liked for music, gaming and voice).

I have 4.1 Klipsch speakers and I love them...
however when I did most of my gaming, we used teamspeak, so I had mic + headphones.

I have my computer hooked up to my surround sound but I only get stereo sound (through coax cable) from my computer. I guess I would need all those color plugs for surround, which I don't have on my receiver.

So I use that unless sound level is an issue (nighttime), then I use some Koss headphones from Wal-Mart.

I have like 7 year old Altec Lansing 4.1's and they suck compared to my headphones. So id say headphones right now.

speakers are way better. when i watch media with good bass (such as BMG's Rock Tour Complex) i want to feel the bass. only a good subwoofer can give me that.

headphones, no question about it. especially if you are playing an FPS game (quake, cs, etc) where sound is vital to winning.

my computer is hooked up to my home theatre. My HT cost me 10K (excluding display) and I got UPS protection for the pre/pro because when my amps (5x165W RMS @ 8 Ohm for speakers + 2x500W RMS @ 4 Ohm for 2 15" subs) power up the amperage drops dramatically for the circuit.

Yet I don't use that on PC games. Mainly because game sound quality is horrid. And the fact that it would be grating for the rest of the family to hear the game. Cheap-ass Oracle (as in the database people) headphone for me. I tried to play on the 92" (720P) projection screen and I just kept drifting back to the 19" LCD.
