This seems like an odd project, they are still power limited by the 6 pin plug, sure, the temps will go down, but, not sure I really see the point once you max out the voltage the card can handle.

They did it with the 1080 FE as well to see how much thermals were effecting / limiting the card and how much power was.
 
Neither completely cooled the VRM, the driver chips only are cooled by the fan. Couldn't have hurt the guy to take one or two of these copper memory heatsinks, saw them up and paste them to the driver chips.

Shoddy modding, but the card seems to benefit from better cooling.



Custom cards or reference PCB + proper cooling are going to be fun to watch.
