I'm willing to bet that Nvidia will release a newer 6800 with working Video processor too.
For now, 6600GT gets my vote.

Isn't the 6600GT also using a smaller die process, reducing heat?

Is this
Leadtek Geforce 6800

one of those?

Thanks. :)

Only the PCI Express 6800s (the ones using the NV41 chip) have working WMV9 decode. The AGP 6800s are all NV40 chips, on which the decoding is broken.

I think your bf would be very happy with either a 6600GT or 6800NU. If you hunt around, you may be able to find a deal on a 6800NU for closer to $200 than $300, and you should be able to get a 6600GT for ~$200.

Definitely go with the 6600 GT. I have been playing half-life 2 pretty much flawlessy with the settings almost cranked up. It is an inexpensive card that you can't go wrong with!

Hey Caly, if you live nearby a Micro Center store, they have the eVGA 6800's on sale for $230 and the 6800 GT's on sale for $320. You can't go wrong with that! I wish I had a girlfriend as cool as you...:D

No Micro Center stores near here. :/
The closest store near work is J&R and they seem to have a shortage of video cards in general.

1280 X 1024 is the resolution he always uses which seems to be the 6800 ideal, but only slightly above the 6600GT's ideal...

The game that seems to take up most of his time is Final Fantasy XI online, and I don't think that's
particularly demanding.

So I'm really split between the vanilla 6800 and the 6600GT. :)
Now to hunt down deals and see how that goes.

Thanks again. :)

This should be your best bet then:
Text

$250 for a BFG 6800 OC is a pretty damn good price. They're usually out of stock, but my friend ordered one and got his yesterday. So order quick! :) But you should always call first for availability. You won't be needing this until Valentines' Day right, so no hurry .....maybe you could backorder it.

Oh and usually the BFG's are pretty successful when it comes to unlocking the four extra pipes.

Dang, and I recently just bought my BFG 6600GT OC for the same price at Chumbo.com. Oh well, still happy with the 6600GT.

Hello again. :)

I've narrowed the search down to a vanilla 6800 because he only plays at
1280 by 1024. (I put his computer stats at the bottom)

Which of these would you recomend the most? Which somes with the coolest bundle? :D
Are there others I should be looking at?
Thanks! ^^

BFG FX6800 OC at Outpost.com
Leadtek nVIDIA GeForce 6800 at Newegg.com
XFX GeForce 6800 at Monarch Computers

Asus NForce2 A7N8X Deluxe
AMD ATHLON XP2500+333MHz
CORSAIR VS512MB400 3200 DDR
SAMSUNG SP0802N 80GB 7200 RPM
Dell 19in LCD 1280 X 1024

I read a lot of bad stuff about the XFX stuff here in the forums.

Looks like you are on the right track though.

I'll second that. I have a XFX card, not exactly high quality. I've also seen multiple posts, since my purchase, that put a negative light on XFX.

Thanks for the heads-up.
I found the
eVGA GeForce? 6800 at Circuit City

Looks like I'll be staying away from the XFX card at least.
I need to call on the BFG one and see if they would be able to deliver by 2/14.

Ahh choices, choices. :)

definitely the BFG if it's in stock. it's a much better card, you get a lifetime warranty and you wouldn't have to deal with mail in rebates. my friend ordered one of the BFG's from outpost about a week ago and it was in stock. he got it in 3 days :D

BFG or Leadtek. Both are great cards. I believe the leadtek comes with 2 full games, while the bfg comes with none.

Awww. It just seems a fitting gift, something related to computers.
After all, I met my boyfriend online in '99.
We MUSHed and MUDed together, then moved on to Archmage/Archspace, then Diablo & Sims Online, and now FFXI online. :)
