Once again, for a gamer, the 1156 based i7's are overkill...and overpriced for reduced performance.
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/100?vs=288

Are there applications where the i7 shines? You betcha...especially those that take advantage of the extra cores and hyperthreading...but with very few exceptions, games don't.
Not only does purchasing an i7-9** processor cost more for the processor, it also requires purchasing an X58 board...and they tend to also be considerably more expensive than comparable 1156 P55 based boards.
It just doesn't make sense for a gamer to go with the socket 1366 platform.

I would recommend either dualie 460s for video cards or a 6950. The 460s will be a lot faster in SOME games, and slower in others.

Thing is though, even a single 460 plays all my games just fine at 1080p with everything near max settings. I think SLI is a pretty good option. The other nice thing is that idle power consumption of two 460s shouldn't be very different from a single 6950(though they will use about twice as much power under load if you overclock them).

You're a moderator...move it to the correct forum. :p

lol... i only wear the mod hat in cases and cooling.

Other then that, im just another NUKE mark and zap needs to worry about when things get heated.

That's just throwing money away. At least get him on an i7.

Primary difference between i5 7xx and i7 anything = Hyperthreading

Hyperthreading = not much, if any, benefit for games.

Games in general are not very CPU limited at resolutions and video settings people actually play at, never really has been.

I don't see any of this changing much in the near future, i5 is a great option.

I recon you have to go the 6950, there is no question, almost 100% unlock rate to 1536 shaders and most people can get to around 950 core 1350-1400 memory. that puts it right next to a stock 580, massive bang for buck.

it is worth doing a close eval on 1156 vs 1366, because with 1366 you can really skimp on the ram speed.

on a gamer build GPU wins over CPU, maybe consider a fast clocking X4 if you cant get an i5/7 to fit in budget, but dont skimp on GFX card for CPU. with a GPU even with old games you can put that extra performace to use. EQAA/edge detect/SSAA all can make missive visual differences but can have big performace costs.

funny thing is i turn off HT on my 920 but thats because its a C0 stepping and it overheats during transcoding with HT on but fine when disabled.

Newegg's prices aren't great atm. Prez day is coming up though so check back this weekend.

Also, if you have a Microcenter near you, the i5-760 is on sale right now for $170 + tax. Don't pay $210 at the Egg.

i7 -950 is on at MC for $199 - another good deal ..

Not really, i mean it is a good deal, but price vs. performance for gaming it is still not up to the i5-760 after the more expensive motherboard and triple channel ram anyway. i would rather save $75 and get a gtx 560ti then spend the money on a cpu i wont fully utilize with features i wont use (HT) and get a 460 768mb.

Hyperthreading, added cache, better IGP and clock speed. Does that I5 have the memory controller on die? I know the 2500k does, not so sure about the 760 though. Thought that was the " On Package " chip with lesser performing memory controller than the i7.

It's the I5 6xx that have graphics with memory controller in the graphics portion. 760 is just like the I7 8xx chips without hyperthreading.

I would get an I5 2500k again if I could do it over so I would recommend waiting for it if you can wait a few months but I hear the 760 isn't a bad alternative. Some say 950 if you have a microcenter nearby.

I get it, couldn't understand why they were claiming that was any good for gaming. To many variants to keep track of.

I picked up an i7 950 for $200 last weekend at microcenter so if you have one nearby get it there. I would have gone with an 1156 i5 if that 950 wasn't so cheap plus the fact that the only 1156 boards they had were m-atx and i did not want that.

i was gonna say just get a 2500k from microcenter (or newegg), and then get a p67 board off of ebay...but that was before i checked ebay and saw the RIDICULOUS price gouging going on with the P67 boards. $300? -_-. last i checked, maybe a couple weeks ago, you could get one for $150. still a bit pricey but definitely reasonable.

i'd just wait.
