Hello! I need a new gamer computer, and was looking to put together one for around 1000 or less. I have been out of the game of computer building for a while and trying to do a little research on what to get. Anyone have any suggestions on a good build I can do with a budget for 1000 dollars. Thanks!

Start off with a motherboard, a processor, some RAM, maybe a video card if you really want to game. Definitely a power supply and case. Add a keyboard and mouse and you'll be ready to play!

If you dont need anything more personal here is a quick build for ~$1000, if you need more personal advice i urge you to start a thread over in general hardware.

Yeah OP, get a pair of GTX 460s in SLI.

I'd also get anywhere from 8gb to 16gb of memory, depending on what you want.

The CPU and platform is where it gets complicated right now. It's hard to really recommend anything in light of what's happened with Sandy Bridge. What I did was to get a cheap Phenom II combo to tide me over until Bulldozer is out.

IMO a nice hard drive setup is a pair of 1tb 7200rpm drives in RAID-0 for your games, a 2tb drive for your backups and media, and an SSD for Windows and your basic apps.

The rest of the build is pretty subjective.

Good luck! $1000 is a nice budget.

Do you need a monitor, os, keyboard, etc or just the box? What games do you like to play? In that price range it really matters.

The hell is wrong with an i5?
EVEN if it is 1156 the i5-760 was and IS a good CPU for the money, sure if you can get 1155 and are willing to use only the SATAIII ports then it is better value for the money, but if you need more SATA and don't want to deal with expansions or a more expensive motherboard, then the i5-760 is a fine alternative.

What exactly is wrong with an i5-2500k in a $1000 build? It's $200.

I inferred that he was talking about my (and others) suggestion of the 1156 i5-760. Though if he were talking about the i5-2500k then that statement was even more ridiculous.

Great CPU no doubt but if you're going to spend 1k on a computer you invest in the CPU, not video cards with a six month product cycle.

That's just throwing money away. At least get him on an i7.

An i5-760 is not an investment? That CPU should still perform fairly well in 3 years even, at that point if you wish to upgrade then i think you have probably gotten your money's worth.

Intel CPU's don't get much cheaper while they're still competitive, video cards do.

Well if you think you can do better post up a build he can build today that you know will be able to do everything he needs it to do. (keep in mind you don't know how many SATA ports he needs or if he has mission critical data)

- 100 from gpu (6850/6870) + 100 cpu (i7). Definitely avoid dual GPU until you know you want it. It's not for everyone.

DX11 cards are fast right now, no need to overspend in that department.

What's the i7 got over the equivalent i5 for the extra cost? Hyperthreading? Anything else significant?

For a gaming rig, the i7 is overkill...and a waste of money.

If the OP can wait for the Sandy Bridge redux, then the i5-2500K is the best he's gonna get...if he CAN'T wait...i5-760 is the next best thing for a gamer.

Hyperthreading, added cache, better IGP and clock speed. Does that I5 have the memory controller on die? I know the 2500k does, not so sure about the 760 though. Thought that was the " On Package " chip with lesser performing memory controller than the i7.
