GameCube or Classic Controller?

I just bought Paper Mario and now I need a controller. The Wavebirds work with just about everything (except the Wii menu (grrrrr) ) While the classic controller seems to be limited to Virtual Console stuff. Is there some advantage to the classic controller that I don't know about?

Couple of possible advantages -
1. L and R buttons are better for older games before analog L&R buttons existed.
2. D-pad is placed in a better position for older games
3. Button layout is more traditional

Paper Mario on the VC, Gamecube, or Wii? I'm assuming the VC. (which I wonder, why not make the nunchuck plus wiimote combo work?)

Classic controllers work for just about everything a gamecube controller does, except for gamecube games.

The classic controller seems a bit better built, but the gamecube controllers are more ergonomic. I'm assuming that the gamecube controllers will be phased out in favor of the classic controller.

I wholeheartedly disagree. The build of the classic controller feels so awkward. I don't have troubles with any other controller build (Wiimote, Xbox 360 controller, PS3 controller), but the build of the classic controller feels really uncomfortable. I almost always opt for use of my GC controller rather than the classic controller.

I use Wavebird because it's wireless. I can lay in my bed and play. Corded controller don't reach that far.

While I like the wavebird, the button for certain games like Super Mario world is very awkward, and thus I think the classic controller might be better suited for you.

I would think it would depend on the game. I was thinking about picking up Super Metroid on the VC, but there's no way that game could be played without the classic controller.

I ended up with a classic controller. The only wireless gamecube controller I could find was pelican that looked larger than the wavebird.

I'm digging the layout of it. I don't like having to have a Wiimote attached to it but I can deal with it.

Oh and it is N64 Paper Mario (Virtual Console). Super Paper Mario was a ton of fun and I loved Super Mario RPG so I thought I'd give it a shot. I have to say Mario jumps like a pansy in this game.

I can't really bring myself to invest in classic controllers at the moment. 4 Wavebirds and 4 wiimotes (still only have 2 chucks) is a lot of controllers, and considering the Wavebird will do everything classic controllers can do as well as play GC games...I will admit the analog side buttons are a pain (doing a barrel roll in Star Fox 64 can be a major chore), but there are going to have to be more reasons (VC games) for me to invest in more controllers 😛

For N64 games the Gamecube controller is all you need. If your going to get some SNES ones I would recommend the classic controller. Stuff like Super Mario World would be next to impossible with the Gamecube one.

Nintendo certainly is making a killing on accessories. You can't tell me that a Wavebird needs to be $35 anymore! For a "fully stocked" Wii, you would need:
4 Wii-motes
2 Nunchuks (since I don't think the Wii actually supports 4 Wii-motes + nunchucks)
4 Gamecube controllers
2(4?) Classic controllers
1 Gamecube memory card

That's a crazy amount of controllers, although you could easily halve all of that. Still, even half that amount is a lot of money spent, not including games.

I just beat the N64 Paper Mario on the VC with the classic controller, and now I'm playing Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door on Gamecube and much preferred the button layout on the classic controller. The gamecube controller feels akward using the game designed for it, I wouldn't try it on a game not designed for it.

What makes you think that?

Maybe he means there are no games he knows of that use all 4 Wiimotes + nunchucks, but he would be wrong.

the killer part is that there are even more peripherals planned... Wii Zapper... Wii Wheel... the friggen balance board thing...

Nintendo is really going to be rolling in it
