what do you need a modchip for? you can get a bootdisc that'll let you play imports, that's about it.

You can swap two resistors to make a US into a JP. My cousin has a development GC at his work with a switch on the side.

This is the first instance of me hearing about someone wanting to MOD their GameCube. I say don't do it for several reasons:

1. It's uncommon. Since most GC owners are happy with the product in the first place.
2. Piracy destroys Nintendo's Revenue, which ultimately cuts into the cost of games and the resources to produce them.
3. You need to buy those smaller DVDs to burn games onto... seems like a lot of work, energy and time to do this.
4. There is already a bookdisc available, so no need to modchip.

Good luck!

as of right now.. there's no way to make any games that will self-boot on the gamecube anyway. even if you did buy small dvd's, you can't put them in and load them. the only way to even play a 'copied' game is to have the ISO on your computer and stream it over to the gamecube over the network using the broadband adapater and the phantasy star online game. even then, the PSO game only lets you use 10mbps so it'll be slow as all hell. it's not worth the hassel if that's what you want to do. <3 my cube. even if they cracked it, i'd still buy all my games. they have the best replay value!
