Gamecube controller...

I'd like to pick up a gamecube after christmas because its just so darn cheap now, and its got some great games (nhl 200X, zelda, mario kart, etc...)

The only thing I'm wondering about is the controller... What do you guys think about it? I don't think it will matter that much for games like zelda, but it would seem kinda akward on sports and fighting games right? Do they have 3rd party controllers that change the layout of the controller to something like the SNES buttons (4 equally sized buttons) as opposed to 1 big center button and 3 lima bean buttons?

I didn't really like the feel of the PSX/2 controller, but to be totally honest, they have a pretty good controller. 4 action buttons, start, select and the 4 shoulders (although I would prefer to only have 2 shoulder buttons)...

This will be my first console purchase since N64 (which I sold a year after I bought it)

Worst controller ever. If you play fighting games, make sure you pick up X-Arcade joystick.

You should get one now, by next week, it'll be back to full price or all sold out. That Wal-Mart deal is smoking hot. I would have gotten one but I owned it previously and thought Gamecube sucked compared to Xbox or PS2.

The controller is fine for everything minus fighting games, the PS2 controller comes first in my books, and the Xbox third.

I kind of like the Gamecube controllers, my hands aren't too big so it fits nicely. I really like the wavebird controller, it feels nice and it works great esp from a distance. My only peeve is the analog stick, it feels too loose.

the controller is fine and i think it works well for fighitng games, its every persons preferance jsut try one out in a store or at a friends house if u can and then you will know if u like them or not.

And the is an adapter that lets u use a PS2 controller with a gamecube if u prefer those controllers

The Gamecube controller is absolutely perfect for Nintendo games.

But for other games.... ack! Horrible for Soul Calibur II.

No, why would it?

There is a 3rd party manufacture that makes the PSX -> Gamecube adapters, but from what I Heard they kind of suck. I think it was a Nyko or Pelican brand. I haven't seen them around in a long time though.

I didn't think I would like the Gamecube controller, however it is know my most favorite controller out there.

I prefer it for Soul Calibur II moreso than PS2 and/or XBox.

I don't understand why people have such a problem with the Gamecube controller. Like everything else, you'll get used to it. I have no problems switching from the Gamecube controller to a PS2 dual shock.

And I actually prefer the feel of that microcon PS2 controller to the Sony one.

IMHO, the Gamecube controller is the best out of all three next gen systems. Xbox Type-S comes second. PS2 dual shock isn't even on the radar.

The wavebird is excellent.

I got a Gamecube last year and was really used to the XBox controller. I like it better than the XBox controller now (even the S version).

Ive had no problems with it in any game. The D Pad is a little small, thats really the only thing I would change.

The GC controller fits my hand perfectly. And I rock at Soul Calibur with it, so I don't see why everyone whines about it sucking for fighting games.

Yet another vote for the Wavebird here. My little brother has a PS2, and although it is smaller and the buttons are closer together, the layout isn't as "contoured" and the GameCube controller. It just feels right in my hand!

The only thing I hate about the PS2 controller is that they label their buttons with symbols... which is hard to get used to when playing games where you need to know what the buttons are....

For overall comfort, the the GC's controller is the best out there.
For action/adventure games, the GC's controller is quite possibly the best controller ever.
For racing games, it's second only to the Dreamcast's.
For fighting games (other than SC2), get a stick w/ arcade components.

The overall layout is easy to get used to, especially when you remember the Z button, and finding most buttons is almost subconsious. The D-pad is virtually a vestigial item and doesn't work in most games.

The controller is crap. Other than its obvious size limitations and the design catered toward a younger audience you have the distinctive quality issues. Hold a PS2 controller (or even an xbox controller which I put in the middle of the three for quality feel) and you'll understand how nintendo can shave some of the price off gamecubes. It feels like it uses plastic recycled from recycled inexpensive kids toys, which in turns were made from recycled plastic. I'd advise those with more matured hands to get an aftermarket controller

Funny, when I held the XBox controller I thought "shittiest 1st party controller ever". And alot of people agreed (PA has made many comics on this issue). I haven't tried the S controller (which they should've used since launch) though. The ONLY time that I ever see parts break on most of my controllers on any console is when the rubber domes (which they ALL use) wear out. And unless your hands come from your father whose name is "Sasquach" the GC's controller is a good size. The PS2's controller isn't too bad, it's very versitile, but it gets uncomfortable after a period of time.

The original xbox controller, which the xbox no longer sells with, was a dinner plate size and was far too big. The s controller is pretty good, and it definitely feels higher quality than the gamecube controller, which feels similar in quality to an N64 controller. The plastic joystick on it just feels exceedingly cheap. And, considering Nintendo does aim for the younger audience, I find it perfectly understandable that they would create a controller egonomically designed for younger and smaller hands. Not to say that adults can't use the controller, but it's not perfectly made for their larger hands. My hands are not more than slightly above average and I find the GC controller so small that with constant use I'd be sure to have my hands tighten up and go weird.
