Update 07-30-03 I got a second Broadband Adapter from Walmart... this time for $20 even!!! It's from the same Walmart that was selling the other one for $30 even (Newnan, GA). They apparantly tucked this one away to make it looks like they were selling out and put it back after I bought the "last" one. It stayed there until they reduced it a few more times. It's definately the same one that I saw there with the one I bought a week later. Once again, check your local Walmart and CHECK AGAIN!

Update 07-30-03 Douglasville apparantly does have one and it WAS on sale. The only one left has the price tag ripped. It rings up at full-price but what's left of the tag clearly shows that it was $20-something dollars (Less than Newnan's $30 even)

Update 07-22-03 none at the Douglasville Walmart Supercenter wither. I didn't check Sam's Club. I got the last one in Newnan, GA but there's another one on the shelf now. Is this a restock of a clearance item?! Might wanna check twice at other stores. :)

Seems to be unadvertised. My local Wal-Mart Supercenter put the Gamecube Broadband Adapter on clearance (Should be called "Ethernet Adapter" because more games are gonna use it for that than Internet access :roll;). $30 even. I asked at a normal Wal-Mart the next town over and they told me that they had never seen them on the shelves and that the Supercenters put some items on clearance that they do not so YMMV (Perhaps only Walmart Supercenter carries it?).

Reported so far (Updates 07-22-03):

Newnan, GA Walmart Supercenter: Had one for $30, then one for $20. None left.
Carrollton, GA Walmart: None stocked. Unable to confirm price.
Peachtree City, GA Walmart Supercenter: One unit, normal price
Douglasville, GA Walmart Supercenter: Price tag ripped off. WAS clearly $20-something dollars but rings up at full price. :(
Douglasville, GA Walmart Sam's Club: Couldn't check yet. Does Sam's Club do clearance?
Baton Rouge, LA Walmart ? Cortana Mall: $10! Check for restock? (See above)
Baton Rouge, LA Walmart ? Siegen, Perkins: No go reported. No stock or not on clearance?
La Habra, Buena Park, Cerritos, CA WalMarts: No go reported. No stock or not on clearance?

I'm sure stock will return at the higher price when Mario Kart Double Dash is released (WITH LAN SUPPORT!) so get it while you can.

Thanks for the post, I almost bought one a while back at $35. Even with $5 off isn't this basically a waste of money? Other than Phantasy Star Online, what games will take advantage of this?

Wow...At one of my local wal-marts (and i know this is HUGE YMMV), they had the broadband adapters marked down to $10! I don't really even need one, but for that price, i couldn't not get one.

Edit: and besides PSO, the new Mario Kart is gonna have a pseudo-LAN thing you can do with the adapter, supposedly.

Is there a monthly fee for playing games online? I've done some web searches for this but I haven't netted anything.

What are the big online-capable games?

Thanks in advance... I'm wondering whether this broadband adapter is worth anything.

For PSO, theres like a $10 monthly fee. Other than that, I don't think that there have been any other online capable games announced. The only reason i even bought one was because it was only 10 bux, and if my roommate gets another one, we can play Mario Kart on a LAN without being in the same room.

Just read up on Mario Kart, that is pretty cool. didn't know that was possible.

Re Online Play: I think they basically don't see the money in it yet. They offer the adaptor so theoretically another game developer could allow online play with their games. But no game, besides Phatasy Star Online, has offered it yet.

I went to Douglasville but wasn't able to get to Wal-Mart in time (Had to run my brother back home to work). I'll still try to get there tomorrow... Please list the Wal-Mart's selling them at dirt-cheap prices! We need to know locations...

dahotboykj is in Louisiana (The $10 adapter). What city?

And kinda like the XBOX with it's "Link cable" (Just a crossover ethernet cable)
And the PS2's Firewire networking ;)

I don't think you fully realize the quality of Nintendo's D-Pads (EXCEPT the Gamecube). Put simply, anyone as good as I am at Tetris Attack / Panel de Pon / Pokemon Puzzle League (All the same game) knows that it is IMPOSSIBLE with any third-party controller or any other console's controller. NO floating D-Pads have the accuracy needed at the insane speeds I play at. Even the mighty PSX/2 Dual Shock bows to me with it's slow bounce-back. I'll have to make a video to show off...

Of course, fighting games are horrendous with a PSX/2 controller because rolling on that thing was DESIGNED to cause blisters by forcing you to drag your thumb across solid plastic.

The GCN's D-Pad is identical to the GBAs, but you can not play Panel de Pon with it because of the angle (I imported Nintendo Puzzle Collection). "Up" sometimes is interpreted as "down!" (I noticed that early because Rogue Leader continually sent my wingmen the wrong commands). COnnecting the GBA as a controller "solves" it except that it's still too small for super-fast accuracy.

Believe me, if that store had had any more than that last one i got, I would've bought them all. Hell, for $10 i figure i can't lose.

Oh yea, and for the record, this was at a store in Baton Rouge, LA.

The very reason why this is absolutely essential to have in times like these!

Hey I'm in Baton Rouge too and need one of these for my Gamecube. Which Walmart was it? Siegen, Perkins?

YMMV indeed as there are no corporate markdowns for walmart. Markdowns are decided strictly at store level. One more thing, walmart will not pricematch another walmart store, just the rule, it isn't happening.

Because Nintendo's marketing dept. is arrogant and clueless. There was an article in one of the trade mags that showed how in the past, Nintendo told the consumers what they should like and we bought it up. Now, with all the competition, that doesn't work anymore, which is why they're #3 in the console wars. Their GameBoy is supporting the entire company because there's no competition, but that's about to change as well with SONY and Nokia stepping into the race. Nintendo is supposed to have a big turnaround in the way it does business sometime this fall, so hopefully we'll see them get their act together, otherwise they'll be the next Sega.

It's technically just a rumor at this point, but future GameCube games (including Mario Kart) will supposedly support Internet play.

Story here.

tw1164: It was in the electronics "Clearance section" of my local Walmart and not hanging on the racks next to the Wavebirds and Memory Cards. They usually shove all their clearance items to the front of the store on racks and tables near the checkout registers but there seems to be a perpetual clearance section within electronics also (Where I found it). I noticed them there a few weeks earlier looking tattered and dusty but it was still full price.

dahotboykj: Did any of the other stores have them at full price?

I've only checked one SuperCenter and one other regular store, and neither had the adapter....But yea, the one that i found was in a clearance rack right outside of the electronics dept.
