Read more at wired.com - all the details are there. Personally, I wish they'd drop it even more... I think $60-70 would make a better price point. But what do I know?!
If you look at the article, it says that Nintendo is dropping the price to $79.99, down $20. Therefore, they are referencing the MSRP of $99.99 that Nintendo set. However, most stores sell it for $89.99 currently. Therefore, perhaps we'll see this for around $70 afterall...
I seriously doubt that MSRP will drop below $70.00 since Game Boy Color currently retails for $69.95 and article makes no mentioning of GBC. However, it is not entirely impossible and would be a welcome news for us parents who have kids that want one Krusty: you are correct in stating that current shelf price is $89.95 but read closely, it refers to "original" price, which, indeed was $99.95 at release.
most stores from the get have been selling it at 89.99 very few ever sold it at 99.99! I am surprised on this though as i heard that they were flying off the shelves at the 89.99. well i guess they were not flying to fast! Also they have no competition so why the price drop?
I know I'm eager to see a backlit GBA as much as you guys. If you're interested in a possible solution in the works, check out PortableMonopoly.com, if you haven't already.
A new update was just posted two days ago. Sounds like his backlight kit may be coming very soon. In the most recent update, he talks about bundling the necessary parts to pull off the backlit mod - as long as the kit was reasonably priced, I'd certainly go for it.
After using one of these off and on since christmas I'm continualy surprised that Nintendo would sell such a bad product, and the people would actually buy it.
Not to be technical, but a frontlit (sidelit) version is actually much better that a backlight version. I would have never bought it if is was backlight. The screen would be totally washed out in sunlight.
And the screen is really only too dark for a couple of games (castelvania being the example most people point to). Most the games I have are perfectly playable in normal lighting.

I've been following that from day one It looks like he wants to sell the mod for $30-$40....which is VERY doable. I don't play my GBA anymore because of the crappy screen.

The screen is too dark to play at night unless you're using halogen lamps in your house or something, and a backlight with an on/off switch is what everyone said should have been included. That guy at Portablemonopoly.com is getting 10 hours of battery time out of his mod (which Nintendo said was not possible), so I'm really looking forward to his kit.

Ok, perhaps you didn't understand what I meant. The LCD in the GBA is a reflective LCD. I backlight will do nothing for it. It needs a fronlight. That is what the guy at portable monopoly developed. A back light LCD would be washed out in direct sunlight, reflective LCDs work fine in the bright light.
