My Fuschia GBA arrived today. So I immediately went out an a quest to change "Pink" into another color. Well, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME TRYING!!!!!!
Welcome to the 21st Century!
If you've ever purchased a Game System within the past few years, you know that most stores scan not only the UPC, but the SERIAL NUMBER of the unit. This Serial Number then appears on your receipt. Well, here's what happened at three major stores that I tried to exchange it. Note: at every store I gave the same story: "I received this as a gift and would like to exchange it for another color. Unfortunately, I don't have the receipt."
TARGET: "Oh, no problem at all." The lady was very nice and was more than willing to help me. UNFORTUNATELY, the Target POS (Point of Sale, not Piece of Sh*t) System would NOT allow an exchange without a receipt on a GBA. The lady was even nice enough to call their 800 Number "Help Desk" and they informed her that the system does not accept an exchange on a GBA without a receipt. No refund, exchange, no NOTHING. She regretfully had to turn me away, still Pink. I could tell that she really wanted to help me though.
TOYS 'R US: "No, we do not accept any returns or exchanges on items from the 'R Zone' without a receipt." I said "but it's not even opened." "I'm sorry, but that's our policy." This lady was not a nice as the Target lady. In fact, she was Stone Cold B*tch. I could tell it was not worth pursuing any further at this store.
WAL*MART: OK, I figured that I would be successful here. Wal*Mart is known as having a very "liberal" return policy. NOT THIS TIME! The guy at the returns counter called back to Electronics, and they guy game up to look over the box. After literally 5 minutes of looking over every inch of the box (and caressing the stickers that keep it sealed), he said that they do NOT take any exchanges or returns on Game Sytems without a receipt. The manager came over and she agreed 100%. THEN, another CSR came over and said "OH, with the serial number on the unit you can determine where it was purchased, the date, price, etc." ("OH Sh*t!" immediately came to my mind). I then said "Honestly, I don't know if it was purchased from Wal*Mart." Instead of ditching me at this point, the lady proceeded to look up the number for the Nintendo Warranty on their POS. She then called the number and entered the Serial Number. The automated response reported "This unit was purchased at a retailer that is not known on our Warranty System." Needless to say, I politely thanked them and left.
At this point I decided to give up. There is still Best Buy, Circuit City, KB Toys, and even Fry's (although Fry's return line WITH a receipt on an unopened item is a nightmare). But I can see though that these $69.99 Game Systems are protected like a Porche, Mercedes or even a bar of GOLD. I don't think Airline Security is as tight as it is on these things.
When it comes right down to it, I'm not really upset. I can totally see the logic in each store not wanting to do the exchange, and I knew I was doomed to failure before I even started. I just wanted to see if someone out there would have a heart, bypass the system and do the exchange. I suppose I could have pushed harder at Toys 'R Us, but the lady there was so unpleasant that I didn't want to even deal with her anymore. A Manager could probably have handled it, but knowing that it wasn't purchased there, I didn't want to pursue it further.
And before anyone throws the morality issue at me, I was very upfront with each store in that I wasn't sure if it was purchased there (although Toys 'R Us cut me off before that issue even came up). And like I said, I didn't even give a *hint* of anger or otherwise cause trouble, since I already knew that this was probably a mission impossible.
I will have to admit that the clerk at Wal*Mart did insult me by looking the unit over with a fine tooth comb even though I explained several times that it had never been opened. I almost went off on him, but then I remembered that one must be nice to common folk.
SO I post this just to let eveyone know that, well, I guess Pink isn't such a bad color afterall. Especially for the price we got the unit for!
