Game with the best storyline?

homeworld1. It all starts with the discovery of an ancient artifact that tells both the secret to interstellar space travel and the origin of our species in the center of the galaxy. The whole planet stops fighting amongst themselves to work together for the greater good of returning to the homeworld.

It gives me the warm fuzzies.


The myth series was pretty good too, even if the 3rd game was horribly broken upon release.
 
Final Fantasy X is always tops for me
Metal Gear Solid 3 and 4
Final Fantasy 7
Dragon Quest VIII was okay
Chrono Trigger was okay
 
Resident Evil is pretty good, all around setting/plot/story though (for me at least) has got to be Bioshock. Heck, might as well have read a novel with the amount of detail in that story. And I hate scary games...
 
Mass Effect had an amazing story an atmosphere. Something about being out where nothing exists but silence really made the game great for me.
 
I like the story in the Metal Gear series.

The story of Halo is pretty cool, especially when you start with Nylund's books.

Nothing has ever beaten Deus Ex and probably never will. Mass Effect comes somewhat close.

Most overrated is Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy

The MGS story might be a little too convoluted, but it definitely isn't overrated. If you can actually follow it, it's really good. As far as Final Fantasy, you do realize there are a lot of different stories in that series, right?

I rather enjoyed the story of FF7 once I actually understood it.

I also enjoy the Halo series story, but they don't explain enough of it in-game nor do they present it well enough, you have to resort to outside material to soak it all in. The Gears of War story is also growing on me. I wouldn't call either of these two series the best, though, just interesting to me.
 
Yeah wow how could I forget Deus Ex. I think I was just thinking console but that definitely has the best video game story I've played.

MGS on PS1 had one of the best story lines. Every other one branched from that and some went from preachy to just downright weird but MGS1 was awesome.
 
All SquareSoft/Square Enix games IMO. This includes the Final Fantasy, Chrono, and Xeno series along with their other games such as Vagrant Story and Legend of Mana. Their storylines appeal to me the most out of all the games I've played so far!
