Hey guys,

I have a spare server PC with windows server 2003 on it. I was wondering some things i could do with it? And one thing that sparked my interest was a game server. Could i load a and run a game server on here? And how would it have to be hooked up to the net to do so? Thanks

You need a pretty decent Internet connection to run more than a 8-12 (768k+ upstream) person game server.
Depending on your setup there, I would suggest setting it up as a file server/media server... and maybe running some sort of DC project on it since it'll be idle most of the time.
I suppose you could also use IIS to host a website on it to give you access to your files when you're away from home.

This area is very new to me, so i'm gonna need things spelled out a bit and i apologize. What's DC, and IIS? And i want to try a server on TF2, how would i go about setting one up on that PC. What programms/apps would i need? Would it be a stat tracked and "official" server?

DC is Distributed Computing
IIS is Internet Information Services... it's Microsoft's web and ftp hosting software. It can also be used to set up a mail server.

I'm not sure how Valve does their server side software now... I haven't hosted a game server since Soldier of Fortune II. Stat tracking would be an addon that you'd have to install on your server yourself, and I'm not sure how the "official" server thing works.

That helped me set up a TF2 server on my computer. The guide shows examples for CS:S, but it will work if you use "tf" instead of "cstrike" or "Counter-Strike: Source" for any of the commands listed.

The server will show up on the server list and TF2's personal stat tracking will work. (as long as your ports are forwarded correctly/firewall properly configured and sv_lan is set to 0)
