Got a free computer that i intend to use as a dedicated game server for a few games.

What OS will be best, and why ?

Currently having XP Pro on my portable and stationary..

But i do also have a Win2k Licence, just not using it.

So can actually install either XP Pro or Win2K. Will get another OS if i would benefit from it..

Ty in advance..

As other posted, it depends on the game. Check the developer site and see what the requirements are for the server and what OS they support.

I've ran both linux servers and windows servers to host game servers and had no problems with either. Both can be very stable if setup correctly (or both unstable depending...).

It also depends on how comfortable you are with the OS. If you like windows better and already have a 2k license, try that. If you like linux better then 2k, then use that as it is free and your 2k license can be used elsewhere.

Cheers.

If this is for a spur of the moment lan party server, then I'd go with Windows. Only because when I've tried to do a game server on a Linux box it required a LOT of messing around to get anything working...

True.

Linux, Like windows, is a tool. IF you need somethign immediately, the rule of the game is that you will inveitably get up and running quicker by using what you know how to use, even if you have reduced functionality because of it (which is not necessarily the case)

Keep in mind that with linux the GUI is not required, so you save on resources😀...but that assumes you have a 64 player BF2 server on a gigE connection that needs every bit of juice.
