Game server setup problem

Ahoyhoy. I tried to setup a quake server for a buddy and i to play on last night, but he couldn't join. I'm behind a router, so it gets confusing. I think I'm in DMZ mode, so he should be able to connect it seems. Do i have to open ports or something?

If you are in DMZ mode, you do not have to enable ports. However, double check ot make sure your computer is the DMZ host.

You have to forward the correct ports to the correct internal ip address for the server.

Not if the computer running the server is the dmz host.

You might want to start by having your friend try to ping the IP that you believe that you're set up as. Start up an MS-DOS prompt and type: ping xxx.xxx.xx.xx (whatever your server IP is). At least you'll know if anything is getting through to your computer or not. It could be that the game is being retarded.

If you are running a server behind a router, there are two different IP's. There is your general IP address that your friend would see and the internal IP you would use to connect to it. Make sure you aren't giving your friend your internal IP like 192.168.0.2...give him your external IP. And forward the ports on your router to the internal IP address of the server. Then it should work fine.

Yeah, he was trying for my external IP.

To put my router in DMZ mode, i put a 0 at the end of the 192.168.1. right? It's a linksys router.

No. You should have a setting in the Linky setup to select which local IP (192.168.x.x) is the DMZ host. You need to enter the local IP for your server there.

Edit: And enable DMZ, of course.
