Game server: security risks

I'm just wondering what kind of risks there are for hosting my own game server.
For instance, 159.153.7.86:27015

Would port forwarding be enough? Can people still "hack" into my server and/or flood it?
I'mjsut using the free Tiny firewall on Win98.

TIA 🙂

I think Windows 98 is secure enough, just as long as you don't have any viruses or trojans installed and you don't have open drive shares. About the flooding... They will always be able to flood you. Even if your PC block the person flooding you, it still has to go across your connection which slows it down. (TCP requires a good connection both ways, so it will kill you still).

maybe you should considering installing win2k, or NT. i don't think win98 was written to be a networking os (in comparison to 2k).

I would just make sure that you have a backup image on a drive on a computer seperate from this machine. This could be as small a 486. If the game server is compromised and ruined you always have that backup image.

Of corse ghosting software is needed. Then you could easily rebuild that machine in a couple of hours. (actually less than)

Keep the backup image off the network until something happens, then take them all off the network and reghost the game server.

If you need to rebuild the server keep looking into why the security was breeched and fix it.

Ghosting software is pretty cheap but well worth the money spent.

I doubt that there is much risk for an intrusion. Since it is going to be port 27015 (TCP or UDP?), it is not an obvious port for port scanners. As long as the port open is not under the 1024 number, it should be OK, most script kiddies will never even know you are running a server as long as you keep that firewall up and only allow through the ports that you will be using....
