Game server - dual P3 Xeons 866mhz 256k cache...comments?

I'm wanting to put together a server for my network so me and my buds can play Wolfenstein, JK2, and other games on a dedicated server without having to bog down one of our units. Well, I found P3 866mhz Xeons with 256k cache for $80. I'm wondering if putting these into a dual system...or even a single cpu system would be fine for a 12-16 player dedicated server...this would be mostly for Q3 engine games which I know take advantage of SMP.

Should I be jumping on this deal? 866mhz P3 Xeons for $80? What kind of mobo would I need for these? Suggestions?

Not only do you need a substantial system, you'll need preatty good connection (t1 or more, perhaps?) to run a dedicated server with 16 people playing at once.

Well he said network, so 100 mbps full duplex is probably a safe bet.

Personally I'd build a dual AMD system, P3's are just too slow any more (and the Xeons are no different, they're the EXACT same core just on a different packaging).

You could even go dual Durons if your budget is tight, but dual Athlon XP's would make a nice server.

I absolutely love my dual 1800+'s.

Viper GTS

Wel after researching a bit more and seeing the high dual xeon mobo costs, I'd actually save about $20 on a dual Athlon MP 1200 over the Dual P3 866 Xeons including mobo.

There goes that idea, lol. And yeah, I'm on a network, so no need for a good outside connection.

2 duron 1Ghz's - cant beat the cost/performance ratio there 😀
