Well, I am pretty much obsessed with Counter Strike and would love to have my own server but renting one would cost at least $100 per month. I am curious as to what kind of connection I would need to run a game server, preferable Counter Strike. I will not be looking to host anything as intensive as UT or BF1942 just counter strike. I know the logical question is "how many players?" well, the answer is "as many as I can get for preferable the cost of only 1 arm....my leg if I have to..." Actually my goal would be 20 but I have a feeling I will need close to a T3 for that. Oh yeah, I get something like 128k upload right now which sounds like a joke for even 2 people to play on but getting 348k upload costs almost $200, what's the deal here?

Also, what kind of connection do I need for a web server?

You could get by with a DSL line that is around 768k up/down. I think it's estimated at 16k per users (320k). A small company has one and I think they pay less than 200 a month.

Yes, to get bandwidth to your home is outrages. You're best bet would be to rent a gaming server (search web on cs rent server). Prices vary. You could spend as low as 65 a month (saves you about 100 from you getting the bandwidth at your door. that's 65 server + 35 you pay now). You could get it cheaper by renting your own server (around 45 a month), but you'd have to support/configure it all!

We rent a Enemy Territory/RTCW server from East Coast Gaming Network. it's 76 a month for 19 players.

Happy Gaming,

I had a cs server once. It was of of cable modem, P3 600 mhz, 512 RAM ATI all in wonder sumthing. It ran fine for 14 players. It's hard to fill up a server if u dont have friends aka a clan. I got rid of it within a month though it was hassle leaving it on and watching the server. I dont recommend getting a faster connection than cable, your server wont last long.
