Game pings are off the charts, but speeds are fine. Why?

I have a DSL connection being fed into a Netgear wireless router. My main PC is connected via ethernet cable, but two other computers in the house use the wireless access.

The speeds of the DSL are fine, and always test in the 1.2MB range. I'm a big gamer, and the issue is when I browse for game servers either via the in-game browser or a program such as gamespy arcade or all-seeing eye, the pings are very high. The odd thing is that the in-game ping doesn't correspond to the ping shown in the browser.

For example if I sort through a list of say one thousand Battlefield 1942 servers and sort by ping, the fastest servers I see will tell me I'll have a ping of 350-450ms. Once cennected to the server though, the actual ping will be more in the 15-30ms range.

Any idea what's happening here?

I'm also curious about this. Gamespy shows most of my pings being in four-digit range, but once in the game my ping is reported around 85 in most cases.

prolly because nobody in their right mind would use gamespy. It has never worked right. It is bloated and a POS all around. Why not just use the ingame browser..(i assume bf1942 has one)

If you'd bother to read my post, you'd see that the problem occurs in Gamespy, All-Seeing Eye, and every in-game browser. Thanks for your insightful help.

Could be that your network has issues when checking results for so many servers at a time? Then once connected, it's a single server to deal with, and less total connections.

just a guess.

Lots of people have issues with Bittorrent when they have it set for the default number of up/down connections. I'm just thinking it could be a similar issue for you.

This does make sense, but the issue persists even if, for example, I refresh a single game server through All Seeing Eye. :(
