Game pad

I am looking for a game pad. I dont really know what is out there. It will be used to play a multitude of games from mainly action, sports, fighting, FPS, and more. One weird thing is it may be run on a playstation emulator for PS2 beta games. (the emulator is from sony and all games are authorized)

Key features it should have:

-Possibly playstation style controller like a macally ishock II or a converter (do the converters work well?)

-Easy programming or recognition for popular games. The less technical it is to set up the better.

-Must be a pad style not a stick and must be portable since it will mainly be used with a gaming laptop.

-Win XP pro compatible drivers.

-Force Feedback or vibration motor would be nice but optional

thanks for any input and suggestions

I know that this is nothing like what you are looking for but you might to look at this : Belkin nostromo Speedpad n52

I plan to get one in a few weeks for fps games.

This is a great product. A ton of buttons and you can program it to do almost anything. The bad points are the butttons are stickier than my keyboards and the thumb buttons are awkward but overall I like it.

I've had my N52 for about a year now, use it on all my fps shooter games. I have 3 other popular gamepads sitting in my gaming closet, they never get used now. The N52 just does the job.

thanks for the responses.

The N52 is a no go since it has to be very portable. It has to be able to play in a portable situation like an airplane. This laptop will be on alot of planes and the controller has to be able to deal with it. No tables should be no problem.

That Saitek looks nice. I have a question about both the saitek and the PS2 adapters. How easy are they to configure? Do they have presets for many games? Or do you sit there mapping each key for every game?

thanks

I would suggest the "smart joy" PS2 adapter, and a genuine Sony PS2 controller. You can get Xbox controller converters as well, but I like the PS2 controller better. I've tried a lot of PC gamepads, and they are just not as good as the PS2 controller.

I bought 2 from here for $13 shipped.
SmartJoy

The PS2 adapters look like a standard gamepad to windows 2000/XP, so you don't need to configure anything (unless you want force feedback). I've never tried the force feedback driver, so can't comment on that. I just plugged in the adapters and they immediately worked.

In general there are no presets for games, although a lot of games already have presets for "generic" gamepads. You only have to map the gamepad once for any game, so its no big deal. I use mine mainly for arcade and emulated games.

Edit - Besides the Sony PS2 controller, I've found the MicroCon mini controller to be very good - this one is very small and more portable.

If you have a Fry's near by you can go with the Soyo KiKY X series playstation to USB adapter. This adapter works perfect in every game I have tried it except with DDR Mats (Power draw issue)

The driver that comes with the adapter is version 2.1A and works quite well.

I have mine on a PS2 controller. If is working fine.

The Saitek's look nice, and the reviews agree.
Normal $20
Rumble $30
Wireless $40
Prices are MSRP's. I've looked at some sites but the prices are all the same exept for some sites that i've never heard of for a few bucks cheaper.

Radio Shack also carries the PSX-to-USB adaptors, for around $10. I think that they support the force-feedback of the official Sony pads, but I'm not sure how to program that feature.

we got two of those things at our place, just so my roomates could use PS2 controllers in melty blood/REACT. the funny part is they cant imagine themselves using the keyboard to play, while i cant even win against hte computer using the controller. so theoratically we should be fine with just 1 controller. the problem is none of those watanabe games (QOH series, GOF, melty blood/REACT) let you redefine keyboard configuration; they default 1p to a controller, meaning i would be stuck with 2p settings cramped in the corner = a major PITA. my roomates seem to like the converter quite a lot, it is fully programmable and comes with rumble feature too. one of them tried it converter street fighter alpha 3 (or whatever the name was) and it worked flawlessly, although no one else likes street fighter so we dont get to play it much.
