Games (UT 04, Americas Army, Far Cry) crash after a few min. The screen gets chopped up, goes crazy, ans sits. Ive had the VPA recover work twice, it bumps back onto the desktop and i guess changes the rendering from direct3d to software, the game's sound still runs OR the screen just freezes and i have to kill the power. I had the catalyst 4.11 drivers and im trying the 4.12 beta
Im spending more time screwing with my display settings and restarting than playing

450w max, and the case has five fans, display says 25/23c right now
VPU error message says somthing about "could not recover from hardware deadlock"

if fast write is on .... try turning it off and try removing the side panal to eliminate the any heat issues .... also is the vid card overclocked ??

What soundcard do you have? You should list your whole rig(Mobo, CPU, peripherials, PS, etc.) as it may help save time diagnosing problem.

ASPIRE X-Navigator Black Case /450W Power Supply
POWERCOLOR ATI RADEON 9800 Video Card, 256MB DDR, 128-Bit,
Pentium 4 2.4c 800fsb
Crucial 184 Pin 512MB DDR400 PC-3200
Rosewill 52x32x52x16 CD-RW Black Combo Drive
Samsung Black floppy
Seagate 120gb Hard drive
Albatron px845pev pro800 mobo
Creative Sound Blaster Extigy external

Where would i find the fast write setting?

Look under the smartgart tab in your video card driver settings, fast write will be in there. Also, what brand is your 450w PSU..just saying it's 450 doesn't mean anything, because a solid name brand 300w psu, is better than a generic 450w psu..if you are using the psu that came with the case, it's generic, and could be contributing to your problems.

I had similar issues with the games I was playing (Halo, Doom3) and it was related to my soundcard, try using your onboard sound and see if you still have problems.

"VPU Recover has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands"
"VPU Recover was unable to fully recover from a hardware deadlock, and has switched to software rendering"

Tried without the case side, didnt help, temps are fine
I unpluged the soundcard (usb) didnt help, i think ill try fully uninstalling it, but im not sure if i have/how to activate the onboard sound
Fastwrites are off
PSU is a genaric Turbolink or somthing

Any more ideas?

UPDATE
Can play DVDs fine, and i played Halflife(1) on opengl for quite a while without any problems, im going to test it on direct3d

Welp, i just played HL again, in both opengl and Direct3D for quite a while without a problem
Case temp readout says 31/26c right now actuall temps are prob about 10 degrees more
Bad card? Doesnt seem to make sense

*edit*
FarCry crashed within seconds of ingame play (i can watch the demo, and go through menus tho)
