My son just told me he wants to buy a game console and asked me which one he should buy. I told him to find out which ones had the games he wants to play. Logical. Now, where can we find a list of all the current crop of consoles with the games that are available for each of them?

BTW, he's 21 and is paying for it himself.

Don't tell me to Google it, either. That would deprive you of helping me and doing a good deed today.:D

I think the threads in the "Hot Deals" section would be best. There are threads deticated to each of the consoles and a HUGE list of games for each in the first post. I would suggest there for a quick overview of games.

I recommend PS2 if he's a RPG fan or wants variety of genre gaming.

XBOX if you want to go online and kick ass.

Gamecube if he likes colorful stuff.

I say XBox...

Since your son is 21, the games for GameCube would probably be too childish for him...

There have been reported problems with the PS2 console (supposedly with the lens failing and not being able to read some games)... and Xbox has been graphics than PS2 anyways...

XBox - Best Hardware and great Online capabilities, some good exclusive titles (Halo namely), a bit lacking in overall game content but getting better
PS2 - Great game selection, great support from 3rd party developers, but ageing hardware
Gamecube - A bunch of quality exclusive titles (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc.), but a bit lacking past that.

This is my opinion. All three have their strengths and weaknesses. He should get what suits his tastes.

I myself have the XBox, and like it a lot. If I were to buy a nother console (not going to happen most likely), I would probably pick up the Cube.

Currently, the PS2 is going to go under a revision pretty soon. The ethernet adapter will be built in and the dvd player will be updated, which is a major plus, and a few more additions. (mine is going out and it wasnt that good to begin with for dvd movies, games just fine though) You can get a upgrade kit that lets you have a hard drive and will let you install linux.

XBox. Currently the most powerful system out right now and has many more modifications that you can do to it. Install linux, turn it into a media center pc, upgrade hardrive and save games to it (no load time then), etc.

I have a ps2. I love the joysticks and that was my deciding factor going up from a ps1. I cant stand the xbox controllers, but there are others out on the market.

The games really are pretty much the same on both systems. They eventually come out for both, with the exception of doom 3, ps2 probably cant handle it.

If he wants multiplayer games, both systems can do them. Although, many game companies do not like xbox live as they do not make much off of it. Sony supplied a hardware adapter and it is up to the game company to decide how long they want to offer a free subscription to their game. I think madden 2003 has a one year subscription. I dont have this, but i have read a bit about it.

Dont go for gamecube. It is a dying console and nintendo is having trouble putting out enough games for it that arent geared towards kids.( Its primary market is kids up to 14 whereas the xbox and ps2 are geared towards an older crowd.

Thanks.

Yeh, he plays Starcraft, Warcraft and FPS's online quite a bit. We'll have to look into this so he doesn't waste his money on something he winds up not using. He's a bit imipulsive, so it's going to be a chore.

I would vote for XBox then. Halo is perhaps the best FPS on a console at the moment, and Halo 2 (with huge online action!), Half-Life 2, and Doom III are all coming to the console.

I had a ps2. My brother had a gamecube and wound up playing on my ps2 more, so we switched. GC has a lot of really great games (mario sunshine, RE series, metroid, etc) and in the future there are going to be a lot more (and you can't beat a $39.99 MSRP for some 3rd party titles when they come out :D).

In the end it just depends what kind of games you like to play...

(I actually got in square-enix's FFXI beta for the ps2...argh. I'm kicking myself for swapping with my brother so soon, but I'm having fun playing mario :) That, and...I need to study for the GREs. Not much time to game anymore)

I have an Xbox. Using Live online service can be frustrating. Some games have technical issues (Mechwarrior) and some games have nearly zero players (Ghost Recon). But, Xbox is developing a solid list of titles and the graphics are second to none. I think the Live subsribers will grow as the game titles grow. I would recommend it.

I don't own the PS2, but have played it. More titles, worse graphics. Bascially sums it up.

Gamecube is a kiddy box. Great for kids and family play, not so for adults. For his age group, I wouldn't recommend it.

Check out http://www.gamespot.com for a good idea of the games available on each console.

I have both an xbox and a ps2. The xbox is my go-to console for multiplayer gaming. We play four player halo at every chance. At $30/ea for controllers, that gets expensive though. I have mechassault for the xbox as well, I've been playing through the single player, I'll get Live eventually.

The PS2 is my console of choice for single player goodness, I play it a TON more then the xbox. Games like MGS2 and the GTA series are really fun, then there's games like Tenchu 3 and Dynasty Warriors 4 that are good mindless single player action. Throw in gran truismo 3 if you like racing and a ton of RPGs, and you've got gaming goodness for a while. Then there's the upcoming GT4 and MGS3 for the ps2 that both look good.

The xbox is more of a "party console" for me, its great when a bunch of people come over. There's really no games for it that interest me right now, so the ps2 is probably my favorite (although I love them both :))

Gamespy.com shall live forever!!!!

That site has reviews for like every game out there..... seriously

I'd go with an Xbox because its multiplayer capabilities are like none other! Play online or offline.

Good games to get:

Fusion Frenzy
Hunter: The Reckoning

Those are both games VERY fun when you have friends over, not so much single player. Two of my friends and I always play those games when we spend the night.

Fusion Frenzy is a little childish but otherwise its good. Halo, obviously, and just look around for other games? I reccomend searching for a thread like "Best XBOX games of all time" at gamespy's forums or something, I'm sure you'll find what you want.

I'd have to say X-Box. Except if you love RPGs then get a PS2. But if you do decide on a PS2, wait until the updated version soon which has progressive scan DVD, integrated Ethernet, and built in remote control support too I think. sounds sweet.

Just go to IGN.com and look at the editor choices for each respective console. It'll gove you a good idea of what games you can find on each system, there he can see which ones most interest him.

I'm 22, and a long-time die-hard gamer. Gamecube wins HANDS DOWN. Anyone who started gaming in the Playstation years is not a gamer and does not truely know what makes a person a gamer (That's why it now just means "A person who plays games").

I've "raised" a few true gamers over the years and they thankfully see from my perspective and see why Sony is just for "Jock-gamers" and not "Serious-gamers."

Hook him up with Zelda:TOoT, Zelda:WW Metroid Prime and Smash Bros. Melee and he'll see what it's all about too and be grateful. :)

BTW, XBOX is awesome, IF you intend to mod it and play classic SNES games ;)

I use mine for all sorts of things but almost never for playing XBOX games!
