I agree that Bell should have kept his cool, but he's dealing with a guy with a PhD in psych. Who's going to lose that battle? It's like me going up against a black belt. That's why Phil should be muted and let the players play.

Furthermore, what would people have said if Kobe went off in a stretcher? Would Phil and NBA fans be smiling then? Hell no, I would be just as mad at Phil for fueling the fire as Raja for seriously injuring someone. For every action there's a reaction, normal rational people don't clothesline others for no reason. Phil would be just as much to blame IMO.

At first I thought you were joking about the Ph D but now I really think you think Phil has a Ph D. Where did you get this information? And what does having a Ph D have to do with anything? What would you do if the black belt is egging you on? Go clothesline one of his sons and say "Ha, I'm not on your level but you made me do this to your son instead"? I would hope you would walk away like Raja Bell should have done. These analogies are pointless.

My point is coaches, players, refs, and even fans talk and taunt each other all the time throughout the game. If you have been to an actual game and sat in the first few rows, you will know the amount of talking that goes on between all parties. Even off the court there is talking. Phil Jackson was simply pointing out the truth. You mentioned earlier that you play ball. You should know that with the style of defense Bell plays, it is a given that you will get hit but inadvertant elbows, shoulders, etc. Bruce Bowen is a great example. He battles with Kobe all the time and they both exchange inadvertant elbows.

Mind games are on the Highest Order ... not "lowly" ... if a player cannot deal with head games at the professional level then he should retire or should have never joined
There's no place in basketball for a coach hurling epithets at an opposing player. Play the game the right way or don't play it all.

Whether Bell has finals experience, is/isn't mentally tough, it doesn't matter. You don't know what someone will do when they snap. Coaches should not be trying to make players snap, that's not cool.

Yeah it's hard to say whether Bell wanted to injure the guy, but nobody wants to see that kind of crap happen. Just play the game the way it was meant to be played, give it 100%, and hope you come out on top. 😉

I agree with your first paragraph. My point was only that the article linked was seemingly making bell out to be some sort of victim because he's a newbie. I don't think that's the case at all. He is an emotional guy apparently. The fact that he isn't a newbie is why it must sting that much more that he lost his cool.

PhD is not literal, it's an expression to show the difference between his level of "mind games" and Bell's. You're talking about the same guy who compared Jason Williams and Adelman to Nazi's, I mean come on. Regarding the black belt, if I was in a karate tournament with his son and the guy made me snap, then yes his son would be in deep crap. Not to toot my own horn, but I hit the gym 5 days a week and used to powerlift. When I was a kid, I snapped on the leader of this gang who was taunting/threatening me and put a sharp stick in his eye. Luckily he was ok.

Yeah I know all about trash talking and playing physical, tight D with other players. But it's rare when an opposing coach will harrass you and get away with it. Do you see this on the high school or college level often? No, the coach will go to the ref and ask what's up, not yell obscenities at opposing players and play mind games with them. That sets a dangerous precedent because the coach can then go tell a player to retaliate, or threaten an opposing player with retaliation just like Cheney did. That isn't good basketball.

High school and college coaches are too busy harrassing and beating their own players. No time to worry about the oppostion. Also, the format makes it less likely, because the "big games" are single elimination.
