for a 7-10" Android tablet the programmers in the Market need to step their game up big time. Almost every app I've download is butt ugly, I couldn't imagine wanting to look at them on a 10" screen when seeing them on my 3.7 cringe. Apps have no polish what-so-ever. There are some exceptions, but the UI's are just uuggggggh on just about everything I've tried so far. I used Convert Bot on my iPhone to convert measurements, a beautiful looking app. Android has about 50 apps that do the same thing, but they all look horrible. Google should pay some top level programmers to bring some apps that look like they were made by professional programmers and not some dude who just finished his intro to Java class. I'm not saying the apps themselves aren't good, but most don't look good at all.

Who cares what the free app looks like so long as the measurement conversion is correct?

I think they've overpriced it too. In my opinion, in order to sell in high volume the target price point needs to be less than USD$500. The farther they get away from $500, the fewer units they are likely to sell - especially when you consider the software/apps lead the iPad has.

Personally, I see little point in a "casual-use tablet," regardless of who makes it or what OS it runs. It's what many people have been saying since the iPad came out - the device itself isn't necessarily bad, but it's not filling any gap in portability or functionality that isn't already filled by laptops, netbooks, or smartphones.

While this may be true, I definitely use my iPad a lot. Even with a really nice deskptop system upstairs, and a laptop downstairs, and a HTPC connected to the TV, I still tend to use my iPad a lot at night... it's really nice to lay on the couch and surf with it. Yes, my smartphone would work for this too, but the screen is much smaller and it's noticeably slower to render pages.

I understand the arguement that the iPad doesn't fit, but the reality is that for me, it's seen a lot more use than I thought it would.

Galaxy Tab won't be even mildly successful unless two things happen:

1. Subsidized price is under $300. Preferably $199 but that probably won't happen, more likely $249 or $299. It has to look a lot less expensive than the iPad. Yes, the 3G iPad is $629 instead of $499, but people see that magical under $500 price and that's what the Tab will have to compete against.
2. Good prices for data-only plans. If you're committing to 2 years of data charges to get one subsidized, then it should have a $15/mo option like the iPad.

I still like the iPad's relatively low unsubsidized price and no-contract data. Not sure the Tab can overcome that. Still, if you're planning on using mobile data frequently, it might be attractive to some people if it has a lower up-front cost than the iPad. It's also more portable.

But that's a lot of assumptions. And it would be really easy for Samsung to completely screw it up - a subsidized price above $300 or unreasonably expensive data plans would kill it.

Agreed, I use the hell out of mine.

The only time I fire up my laptop is to root Android phones and JB iPhones :)

Uhh most people? If the look of the UI wasn't important our desktops would still look like Win 3.1. Windows Vista added that 3d alt-tab thing, for what reason? It works no better than alt-tab it just looks prettier. A UI can make or break an application. And I'm not talking only free apps, what about $$$ ones?

demo of convertbot - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t25BzPXOmCw
the UI gives it the feel that it's a commerical app made by a real programmer.

The UI makes it feel amateurish. Who doesn't like polish on their apps? I know which one I'd rather have on a 10" tablet, but that's just me...

Samsung have ambitious sales targets so I don't see them launching at anything over $400(USD). On contracts it needs to be $199 at most. Samsung haven't got where they have over the last 15 years by going up against superior products at an uncompetitive price!

I'm not sure whether I should laugh or cry.

The guy took 30 seconds to demo converting his height from feet/inches to meters.

Fancy UI slows you down.

it actually doesn't slow you down, he did it slow to show off the app to people who haven't used it. Any conversion app you're going to have to select the measurements you want converted. I can convert about as fast with it as one with a plain drop down menu. Once you're use to using it, it's not slow, and the bonus is it looks 10 times better.

To be honest, I prefer the "amateurish" version. No need for a wheel when you can have drop-down menus.

If there's one thing conglomerates are good at doing, it's hiding losses. This is why they usually underperform.

Ok, after watching the promo video, I want to buy it. 7 inch looks perfect. Easy to hold with one hand and lot more portable than the ipad. It should be faster than the ipad at web browsing and it has flash. Question will be the battery life and price. No way I'm paying contract price with monthly data charge. I also want 8+ hour battery life. Ipad 10 hour battery life has spoiled me.

Well yes it has long battery life but does less out of the box. Still no multi-tasking for the iPad. iPad is a great 3rd device. This device needs to be a lot cheaper to make an impact.

When the next iOS update drops the iPad gets multitasking, or at least the iOS brand of it. That and folders... if the software update came with a price drop feature, then yea, maybe I would consider getting one.

Guys, why do you need an app to convert anything? You can do that from Google in any web browser or its search widget. :p

Yeah, the Galaxy Tab is easily the most polished and fastest Android tablet out there.
We're just perplexed by the pricing.
Let me just quote myself from the other thread:
We don't know what price they're charging here. Currency equivalents are always wrong because stuff is just pricier abroad.

The Korean head of Samsung's mobile division said that "t will cost slightly more than the Galaxy S smartphone". The Aussie price actually shows exactly that: the Galaxy S costs AU$960 there off-contract!

So my guess is $650 (or $630, same as the AT&T-only non-expandable 16gb iPad 3G) off-contract, and as much as any other high-end smartphone on-contract.

That's for the 3G ones, of course. No idea about the wifi-only.

The opening few seconds of this state that it was crafted by a student, for a school project, and that its unfinished. It should be amateurish, its made by an amateur. :p

Look up Unit Converter/ConvertPad for Android.

I did and it's ugly as sin, it looks like it was written for DOS 6.22. I understand Android apps mostly perform the same tasks. But they look bad doing it. I have a phone with a 3.7" very high resolution 220ppi screen and I get apps that look like they're either DOS or an Excel spreadsheet. The lack of polish is strong, I really like my Droid 1 for most things. But I'm having a super hard time getting over how crappy the apps look. ConvertBot isn't some uber app, some programmer out there should be able to make an Android clone. But I'm not seeing it and I don't understand why either. And not just ConvertBot there are hundreds of apps that fit into this category :(
