It seems that though just about everybody's getting the Samsung Galaxy Tab, few know how much it costs, but Australian customers can expect to pay AUD $999 if they're buying off-contract. Several Australian media organizations are reporting that's what the seven-inch, 16GB Android 2.2 tablet will cost, when it arrives at the country's three major phone carriers for a slated November release. Smarthouse points out that the price reveal surprised Australian executives as a comparable iPad 3G 16GB costs just $799, though a Samsung VP told the publication, "we believe this is a fair price." We'll just let the market decide on that one, okay?

LOL, wow they deserve to flop and I love Android

Samsung is stupid. First of all, nobody will want this on a damn contract. It just isn't a necessity like a phone. The subsidy won't help in anyway because most of the time you will be somewhere where there is wifi. They should've just followed Apple's lead and made a deal with one of the service providers to do a month-to-month agreement.

It's almost like they want the product to fail. Considering apple did all the hard work, why do they think they can charge a premium for this product? I doubt it's as polished as an ipad.

Pricey, maybe they are artificially inflating MSRP to steer people into getting these on contract. Not a good strategy to be playing now. There is going to be a slew of Android tablets coming out in fall and winter,

its Samsung's usual business model. Gouge the early adapter and then drop the price as time goes on. I'm sticking with my comparison to their DLP TV's. Look at the prices of those at launch vs 6 months later. Heck...they were almost half price within a year.

I agree with the Kin statement. This thing is dead on arrival with ridiculous prices like that. Luckily for us there's a bajillion Android tablets on the horizon. Hopefully there will be a few with some decent quality. I honestly think I'd rather have an iPhone with an Android tablet vs my current setup (Droid X with iPad).

haha, I thought it was a mistype and supposed to be "king sized failure"

but this is australian dollars and pricing... it doesn't always translate 1:1. but that still doesn't excuse the stupidity of pricing it OVER the iPad in that market. So much for iPad competition this year...

Dell, your move.

AUD isn't 1:1, but $999 AUD is uh...still a lot of money for a tablet.

I wonder why this tablet is so expensive. The hardware is nice, but the screen is small and its just a standard TFT display.

Meanwhile Apple's stock price is nearly $300/share....

There's gonna be a shitload of iPads sold during the Christmas season...

The Dell Streak, but it's not really a tablet, just a big phone. It's also more expensive than the iPad despite being smaller.

yep there's a cheesy non k-mart one available, and don't worry by Xmas we'll have at least 2 or 3 more cheesy ones, I'd imagine a Walmart and possibly Target one. Oh, and a couple Samsung like ones that'll cost MORE than an iPad.

Fuck it, I'll just buy an iPad at this rate. So far the android tablets either suck or (apparently) are way over priced. AFAIC, any WebOS tablet is vaporware until HPalm gets off their ass...as is the Notion Ink Adam.

err, yes, it is a lot, and I didn't mean a 1:1 exchange rate... more like it may cost $1200US in AUS but $900US when it's here. if that makes sense.

HP has said 1H2011 for a webOS tablet. which isn't surprising, they only JUST bought Palm. And it's not like palm had the resources to really get all that far in their own tablet designs (add in anything HP might not have agreed with now..)

I'm more peeved they STILL haven't announced a phone. Not that I will buy it since I'm fine w/ my Pre now, but c'mon, Palm had to have been doing SOMETHING....

The iPad is unquestionably the best casual tablet out there - there are professional-quality tablet PCs that can run a full OS and have much more precise pen input systems, but they're expensive and not really meant for casual use anyway.

Personally, I see little point in a "casual-use tablet," regardless of who makes it or what OS it runs. It's what many people have been saying since the iPad came out - the device itself isn't necessarily bad, but it's not filling any gap in portability or functionality that isn't already filled by laptops, netbooks, or smartphones.

YUP, if they can't beat the ipad in the pricing department, it'll be auto-fail.
I've said that I will get one subsidized if T-mobile has it for $200 and then I'll just paid the $200 ETF fee making it $400.

Am I the only one who suspects the subsidized price will be ~50% of the retail price?

There are actually several Android tablets available, most from Chinese vendors. I have a Witstech A81E, been playing beta tester for Wits with it. Its not a bad device, but the firmware definitely feels half baked. Still, it was 200 bucks. :p I could burn out 5 of them and still be less than a fully loaded iPad.
