Galaxy S3 or HTC One X (Tegra) - Help me decide

Right now I am using a HTC Desire (AMOLED model) which I kept for longer than the 18 month contract just to wait for the current crop of phones. As soon as the Galaxy S3 was up for pre-order I went for it due to the MicroSD slot & screen (need higher than 854x480) but now my sister has sent me a link to a pretty good deal on a One X on a shorter contract.

S3 - £26 (£50 Phone), 24 Month, 600 Mins, Unl Txt & 750MB Data
One X - £36 (Free Phone), 12 Month, 300 Mins, Unl Txt & 500MB Data
One X - £21 (Free Phone), 24 Month, 300 Mins, Unl Txt & 500MB Data

With the news that multiple Nexus devices will be made (hopefully one will be awesome) for JellyBean I am leaning towards the One X. I can live without the MicroSD for a year but 2 would need it. I have about a week to cancel the pre-order for the S3 so time for you fine people to help me pick one or the other.

Thanks in advance, I hate being stuck between decisions.

720P SAMOLED > 720P LCD no contest. I'd even take a lower res SAMOLED over a higher res LCD. LCD is obsolete.

Have you seen the phones side by side? I've read about 15 reviews of the One X online, and I think all but 2 said flat out "best mobile screen I've ever seen"

They've probably never seen the Rezound screen. 720P SLCD has been done before. It definitely looks good but it's no SAMOLED. Been stuck with artificial looking blacks for way too long.

Screen's aren't the same though, the Rezound is a S-LCD, the One X is a Super IPS LCD2. Both are good, but the One X is really on a whole other level. And I'm pretty sure at least 1/2 of the reviewers who said "best screen I've ever seen" have seen both. As they do review phones for a living. I'd bet you $100 if you put 1,000 people in front of the One X and any other phone and ask them which screen looks better to them, the overwhelming majority would pick the One X.

The super fake and oversaturated colors on SAMOLED is way worse for me than issues with black on an LCD.

So you prefer artificial whites over artificial blacks? I prefer whites since they are more prevalent. Also, I don't have to worry about the pixels dying...

I have an SGS2 and change my screen brightness a lot as I move to areas with different lighting conditions throughout the day. The fact that color temperature is strongly dependent on brightness on my SAMOLED+ display, resulting in whites that look either too orange or too blue depending on screen brightness, is a lot worse than the imperfect black level of LCD displays. Next time around I hope to go back to LCD unless OLED has improved dramatically.

Exactly. People say the most idiotic crap sometimes. I compared the One X to the GNex, and honestly the One X screen is far better IMO.

I've also compared SLCD to SAMLED (Incredible S vs Nexus S), and I have to say the SLCD is better.

Blacks are limited by the tech of the LCD, color saturation is limited by the color correction settings.

Oversaturation is part of how OLED screens are. You can scale it back, but it will still be pushed. It's the exact same reasons why they give consumers glossy screens because people love exaggerated RGB thinking its sexy. Just like people love their bass on the beats headphones...

That's because the S3 wasn't revealed or released yet. 😛

I'm not sure if all Samsungs have the option, but on mine you can choose between different color balances. "Dynamic" looks like the oversaturated colors a lot of people like for some reason. You can choose a much more muted color profile if that's your bag. Don't blame the screen tech for a user controlled option.

The funny part is that the Beats headphones have some of the worst, muddy low end I've heard. There are so many better choices for bassheads.

without a doubt. my point is that consumers love certain things. bassy headphones are "fun" but never accurate. people will pick bassy apple ipod earbuds over shures because the shures are too flat (too accurate).

same with glossy vs matte.

and with SAMOLED and LCD too. I don't think LCD is defunct. You can choose whatever you like, but faulting people for preferring LCD when there are LCDs that get close to 100% gamut is ridiculous. Especially when review after review PRAISES the HTC One X saying its got the best screen to date, I don't get people who write extreme things about how LCD is obsolete.

Simply referring to the One X's screen as an LCD is doing it a disservice imho. It's far from just an LCD, that would be like me using the original OLED screens as an example why the latest AMOLED's suck. While I'm still not a huge fan of even the latest AMOLED, I will admit they look tons better than the 1st generation ones.
