The darned thing is nearly a quarter gigabyte in size, so Samsung's not playing here, but users haven't fleshed out everything that's changed just yet. Of course, if you're using one of the millions of Galaxy S devices that aren't an i9000, you've got more waiting to do... but we're certain hackers are already well underway tearing this bad boy apart and crafting custom ROMs for various SKUs. Hang tight!

Yup, I just upgraded my Captivate to Froyo less than 10 mins ago. Looking good so far. No lost of data after the upgrade. But I have to put all my widgets and shortcuts back on my screens.
 
This still isn't an official update so yea no more waiting for Froyo but still have to wait for an update of any kind.

Install LP or ADW/Ex. You can back up your home screen shortcuts and folders. Widgets won't work due to technical limitations though, at least, as I understand it. You'll get a gray box where the widget used to be that you'll need to delete and re-add.
 
right, but most people are still waiting for an official update.

I really wish the US would just use the regular i9000. This would make life so much easier because most people across the globe have had froyo since October/November-ish.
 
I got Froyo on my Epic last week.

There are a few nice little changes but overall it's basically the same. And a lot of people have said that the official build (EB13) isn't much different from the early leaked build that was the basis for so many roms (DK28).

Lol umm...it was a leak. It may or may not be controlled by them.

I have Froyo already on my Fascinate. There are a couple people who are close to getting the i9000 kernel to run on our phone, so hopefully this might be able to help. I doubt it though.
 
The leaks alone are great news. Devs have been very successful porting i9000 Froyo roms to the other Galaxy S devices so there is no reason to assume the same won't be true for Gingerbread.

I'm going to laugh at all the HTC fans if Samsung delivers this in a timely manner, not only will Samsung owners have better hardware but better software to go with it.

Leak is a proof Samsung is working on Gingerbread for the Galaxy S. That alone is good news.

Vibrant has official Froyo and now can run any i9000 2.2 or 2.2.1 roms using Vibrant kernel. Which means Vibrant now has 2x the many available roms to choose from, Vibrant or i9000. And Vibrant doesn't suffer the bad battery drain of using hacked i9000 kernel since you can use Vibrant kernel to run i9000 Froyo stuff 🙂.

CM7 is coming along nicely for both i9000 and Vibrant. I didn't think I would ever see official Gingerbread or CM7 on the Galaxy S. Now there's a chance for both.

...why would anyone care about an official update? Aren't non-official/cooked ROMs what this platform is about?

Even if Samsung released a gingerbread update before HTC, that certainly doesn't lend itself to any bragging rights. CM7 on the G2 is super stable right now. Everything works.

Jesus people the update for the mesmerize IS coming in mach and im sure the rest of the galaxy s devices wont be far behind.
 
Sorry, still way behind the curve. I put Froyo on my Fascinate last weekend. Nice improvement in user experience IMHO.

No it's not.

People had been saying the official Froyo update for the Epic was on its way in October, November, and December. It was perpetually a month away. Finally came out in February.

I expect the same thing for Gingerbread. Late summer if it ever comes out at all.

As for roms, I prefer to just run a rooted, deodexed version of the stock rom. I then remove all the crap apps myself using Root Explorer.

Ive been using my new Fascinate for past week...and don't have 1 reason to really care about Froyo. But I'm a mild user AT BEST. Whatever
 
Read some piles (of texts) in XDA regarding this. Needless to say, the community is quite happy, as I am!

It doesn't seem to have any major problem that our "chefs" can't "fix", so the "flavor" of Gingerbread remains the same. Can't wait to see what they've got cooking for the Captivate!

My wife is far from a power user but she's already liking Froyo more than the stock crap with just 3 days of use so far.

To be fair, I'm sure Touchwiz isn't helping things either.

That's why you use Launcher Pro. My wife and I both use it over Sense and TouchWiz, respectively, and we far prefer it. Stock launchers are slow, jerky, and inflexible.
