If you want ICS now... Nexus. If you want faster hardware and can wait 3-4 months for ICS... SGSII. Just my opinion. I chose to go with the SGSII now and am willing to wait a couple months for ICS.

I'll also add some carrier information. AT&T and Sprint are the only two US carriers that got SGS2s with the more powerful Exynos&Mali. The TMO version has a Snapdragon clocked at 1.5Ghz with an Adreno 220. Its not weak, but pales next to the 'real' SGS2s. Verizon doesn't get an SGS2 spin at all, but will be getting the Galaxy Nexus and the Droid RAZR.

SGS2 has already had ICS ported. I saw it last night or this morning. Still alpha release with the radios not working but its a running system.

Might get fully ported and custom roms before you think.

I agree. My point is that since the base system is already running I have a felling the community will get everything working long before am official update is out.

The sgs2 has a strong support community.

But the nexus will be the first/best/most supported a for now.

Out of the two I got a SGS2 for three reasons:

1. I like the idea of expandable storage, plus I use the power of the Exynos. It plays 1080p mkvs (HDMI out) like a champ and TI OMAPS don't come close on that in my testing. In particular Dice Player doesn't work with new OMAPs, which scratches anything with a DTS track.

2. 720p screens are a huge leap in Androidland, and after messing with my Nook Color (another high-than-average res device) I expect it to be a year or so before apps move away from WVGA towards 720p. Till then many apps (especially Popcap games) will look like crap or possibly not work. The Nexus is a developer phone for a reason- to give developers a chance to work on that before mainstream phones go 720p. When I get my next upgrade the market will be ready for 720p. Let someone else deal with the growing pains. I bet by then there will be non-Pentile AMOLED screens and SoCs that can handle 720p too.

3. Based on history I don't expect the Nexus to show up subsidized on AT&T's network before some random deal next Spring at Best Buy when the phone is old.

So to confirm the SGS2 is made either with ...

1) The 1.2 GHz dual core ARM Cortex-A9 processor that uses Exynos 4210 System.
2) Qualcomm, 1.5 GHz dual core Snapdragon processor

How much difference in performance bwetween the two? WHere can one buy an unlocked version of the SGS2 with the Exynos system.

Im pretty sure the exynos is faster cpu and gpu wise than the snapdragon, but Id need to check benchmarks to be 100% on the cpu.

The 1.2Ghz Exynos and the 1.5Ghz Snapdragon trade punches in benchmarks(some people will tell you the Exynos is just plain better but that is false) depending on what is being tested. The Mali 400 gpu(found on the Exynos is more powerful than the Adreno 220 that is paired with the Snapdragon.

The Galaxy Nexus is the superior phone between it and the GSII. The OMAP 4 rivals the Exynos in performance, the screen is significantly better, Near Field Communication support, better camera, vanilla Android with no bloatware(no stuff running in the background to slow you down), not only is it the first with Android 4.0.1, but it will be the first to get updates beyond that. It is too early to tell on the Galaxy Nexus GPU because no benchmarks have ever been run on a 384Mhz PowerVR SGX540 but it's very possible that it is faster than the Mali 400.

Uh, no. Anand has Nexus OMAP benches. A little better than half of Exynos on GPU...

If you want a Google phone, get the Nexus. If you want the best internet, get the Skyrocket. If you want the best GPU/gaming, get the SGS2.

SGS2 here. I can't imagine needing anything more from a phone/internet device.

If you look at the SGS2 User Manual (p. 136) it does include the following regarding NFC:

"Near Field Communication (NFC) will be available on this phone in the future, but is now temporarily disabled".

Also, the stock battery in the SGS2 has "Near Field Communication" stamped on it as well so I would imagine the SGS2 is all set and just is waiting on ICS in order to make NFC operational.

The Mali 400 is 2x faster than anything out currently except for the MP2, I highly doubt the SGX 540 is faster than the Mali.

Who is your carrier? T-Mobile? If so then the international(ATT also ???) version will not get you 3G or 4g coverage. Only option on T-Mobile is theirs unless your not gonna be using data! I guess you can kinda have data on EDGE.

(some people will tell you the Exynos is just plain better but that is false)

It is plain better clock for clock. When I overclock the Exynos to 1.4GHz I blow away EVERY Qualcomm 1.5GHz benchmark score I have seen. At 1.6GHz it is faster than 1.8+Ghz overclocked Qualcomms.

Why does that matter? Faster clock=less battery life so it is better to be faster at lower speeds.

the screen is significantly better

Depends on your feelings about pentile.

Near Field Communication support

The AT&T SGS2 has NFC.

better camera

The GNex has the faster camera, the SGS2 has the better camera.

If you want a Google phone, get the Nexus. If you want the best internet, get the Skyrocket. If you want the best GPU/gaming, get the SGS2.

Yep.

~2 Months until ICS 4.0 (Cyanogenmod 9). Though I'm highly interested in the Sony Ericsson Nozomi (720p screen ICS phone) and possibly SGS3 as my next phone. Currently got a SGS2

I think T-Mobile also has the Qualcomm version of SGS2 -- same with AT&T's SkyRocket

Currently on ATT, Considering changing to t-mobile since contract has expired.

If your gonna switch to T-Mobile then your better off going with the T-Mobile version. The edge network is about as fast as carrier pigeons if I remember correctly....If you stay with ATT then you can either go for the ATT version or purchase the International version.

I'm also on ATT and have no issues with the service. Got the family plan and have priced around before but they are cheapest for me anyways. I don't plan on leaving them anytime soon anyways so I just go subsidized pricing on my phones. Just can't figure out how everybody states it's best to purchase the phone outright. A person still needs to pay for service anyways. I guess being locked to a carrier is the big deal for alot of people.

The samsclub black friday SGS2 deal for 96 cents w/contract seems like it would pay for a whole lotta months of service (In Savings) when you factor in purchasing a SGS2 for $450-500 outright.

Currently on the edge network with ATT with no date plan. I have a unlocked N95 8gb. I'm considering t-mobile's $49.99 unlimited text, talk & data at 4g speed up to 2GB. With this plan t-mobile only offer the phones at full price. Hence, considering the SGS2.
