Galaxy Nexus back in Play Store, Ban lifted during trial

First and foremost, Samsung and Google have a software patch that they believe avoids infringing the Apple patent that led to the injunction. That patch is expected to be pushed out imminently, Google said.

A patch that removes functionality. Joy. Wonder how long it'll be before its 'corrected' by the community though.

And obviously, Verizon Nexus owners have nothing to worry about . . . by the time Verizon approves this update, there will be octocore phones out.

what was the reason apple was all pissed off? something with search?

aggregating results from multiple data sources into a single window.

It's not about Apple being "pissed off", it's Apple trying to shrink the Android market so that more people buy iPhones. In short, they're playing "unfair". If they can push companies out like HTC, Samsung out of making Android phones then there are fewer competitors to choose from. Samsung + HTC make great phones. If I had to choose between Motorola and Apple, odds are much higher I'd buy Apple. Throw HTC/Samsung into the mix and Apple has no chance (with my money).

They have hundreds more patents like this and will continue doing this indefinitely.

Apple is not trying to shrink the Android market. Whether you believe Apple's patents are valid or not, an argument I'm not getting into in this thread, Apple's goal is very clear. Apple is trying to make it more difficult to use certain base functions that are taken for granted now or helps increase ease of use. Apple knows it can't kill Android.

Think about it. All of the patents that Apple has brought so far (at least the ones I've read about) would not be enough to kill Android. Rather, they are designed to force Google and Android OEM's to produce work-arounds that are more cumbersome. The end goal is to separate the look and feel of iOS and Android into two more distinctive systems where Android would require a more cumbersome and clunky flow to do the same task.

The code is out there...

If/when this downgrade does arrive on Verizon, I'll finally take my phone off stock and switch permanently to a custom ROM.

Screw you, Tim Cook.

The article I saw about this on PC world says this update will be pushed to all nexus phones regardless of carrier so it doesn't sound like Verizon will be a barrier here. I'm guessing since I'm on jelly bean they'll push this crap to me too. This essentially makes Google Now useless.

What's amazing to me is there are actually fanboys cheering this like it's a good thing. All this does is harm consumers. It's not a good thing.

Exactly, do these people think an iPhone would have multitasking or cut and paste or Siri etc etc without competition? Competition is what's driving the innovation in the mobile market.

my biggest fear is that if they remove local search and cross-app searching as it exists now, even if the community hacks it back in, app developers may decide not to support it going forward since it won't be in the official sdk.

We may be nearing the point where even the Apple lapdogs that have been cheering the legal thuggery Apple has been engaged in, may begin to realize that this isn't a game anymore and that there are consequence to this thuggery. This may, in fact, cause the justices in the patents courts that have dutifully given Apple most everything they want to begin to question the decisions they've made. We maybe seeing the high water mark of Apples legal games and going forward they might find it harder to win in this game.

To those that argue this isn't an attempt to kill Android and is only an effort to make it less useful let me tell you they are one and the same! Make Android cumbersome and it dies!!!

I use Android as well, but it's Tim's fault you bought a patent infringing device?

Patents are there for a reason, to ensure innovation. There's NO doubt Apple has been innovating software and hardware.

If you sit on your fat ass and wait for someone else come up with better way to do things- sometimes you lose out.
To the ambitious go the spoils- Apple deserves this success and to stop patent infringement, which has been decided by the courts as correct, and valid.

Tears over this reality need to go elsewhere, like into hard work to buy an Apple device- if you want their functionality. Just speaking the truth.

so do you believe that if/when google is granted their notification drawer patent, that apple should be forced to remove ios5's notification center? that sounds just as dumb as google removing universal search from android.

Apple: Litigation NOT Innovation

Apple's become everything it used to accuse Microsoft and others of being, only far worse.

I've got a love/hate with Apple: LOVE Mac OSX, the few good devices they make, their stock going gangbusters /HATE the company's culture and it's legions of tech-ignorant-yet-endlessly-arrogant cultists.

When they actually start limiting my choice in the marketplace because their outdated iPod+ can't compete fairly, they're tipping the scale more toward the hate side.

I wish Google would get more aggressive and start bitch-slapping Apple right back. And it'd be great if Samsung could find a way to up the prices of all the parts they sell to Apple, while keeping them low for everyone else. Apple constantly punches below the belt but everyone else doesn't hit back. Time to start hitting back.

What is that supposed to mean? That android users are android users because they can't afford crapple? lol.

Not attacking Android users. I am one, I have a HTC Thunderbolt and a Nook Touch. I also have an AppleTV gen2 and iPod Nano 6G (from the 1G battery replacement program). I like all these devices besides the TBolt which has been a perrenial pain in the ass for a work phone, but that's neither here nor there.

Just saying instead of stamping around crying about big bad Apple (which is just simply the finest example of a capitalistic venture in modern history, which is neither here nor there- it just is), the effort is better spent buying an iPhone if they start to have the patents for features you want.

I'm not big on patents, litigation and the sort but the way things are, this is the way it is. In this case, Apple is winning and according to the courts they should be. Business is business, as long as moneys involved there will never be a 'good guy'.

Judgment already happened, no point in linking to various patents becuse I am sure Samsung/Googles legal team already tried it.
Exactly. These are all big boys, and know what they're doing.

Any patents Apple is infringing on, should or shall be judged as well- I'm not saying only Apple can use the patent system. Frankly I don't care about Apple, but I do appreciate the innovation they've done for the market. It certainly hasn't been OPEN innovation, but that doesn't work for companies that aren't built around services as much like Google (who simply appear to be the good guys). Disclaimer: I actually love Google for what they've done for the industry.

The problem with discussing this stuff is that there's too many passionate geekbags that hate Apple. I don't see too many diehard Apple guys running around outside of Macrumors.
