I am interested in this as I ponder on whether I should get it or not as well.

I think it's fun. It's not MoO2 quality, but again, what is ?

I dislike the way that money is the absolute basis of everything - it makes a lot of racial advantages far less useful than they look - and the AI will sometimes do absurd things ( for example in a high military zone, uncover one of your planets and watch the AI send a swarm of troop transports for it, despite the fact the garrison is 1 square away from the planet and it's surrounded by military starbases ) but overall it's interesting and pretty good fun.

Great game, definitely get it. Great support by the developers, no copy protection, great gameplay.

It isn't really my genre of choice, but I've read about it a bit and am thinking about picking it up.

IF you purchase the game, beware of doing it through their website. I did it and it took forever to get my serial number emailed. So, I ordered it with their slogan "Purchase and download immediately!" and found myself not playing until the next day. Pretty crappy service that makes STEAM look great.

As far as the game, well I love it. It gets to be overwhelming at times though. Somehow, it seems like the AI cheats, but I know that it is just better than I am, do to be anal and never getting tired of adjusting everything each turn. It is a challenge though...

I give the game two thumbs up for the most part. It does have a few bugs that cause the game to crash though.

I bought it through the download facility. It worked great for me.

I'm sure everyone doesn't get screwed over by it.

FYI: Apparently, they're releasing a demo. Gamespot has it listed as 9 AM PST Today (Thursday, March 30th, '06). I'm sure the other DL sites will have it available in short order.

Link

Edit: Also available on download.com, 3dgamers, etc

I just played the demo for a little bit, and it was pretty cool. Similar to SMAC, but no annoying mindworms. Anybody else have anything to say about the full game?

A bit of both - it lacks the tactical combat of MoO2, but the scope is more like MoO2 than SMAC ( i.e. you are developing a space empire of multiple worlds ).

Try the demo. No copy protection, DRM, CD checks, or Starforce. So no screwing their paying customers, for annoying copy protection that doesn't even work. You get a serial number to download extra content and patches. I bought the CD, and it works without the serial number, but I can also download the game from them if I ever need to. So it's much better than that stupid Steam crap.

The developers are also committed to improving the game with frequent patches, and extra downloadable material. They made as much of the game as they could using easily modified standards such as PNG, and XML to make it easy to mod. So it really has the best after purchase value of any game out there.

They also put a lot of effort into making it work on older hardware. Just make sure you have the latest video drivers, and it can run on some really outdated computers.

Damn... no tactical combat?

I heard the custom ship creation is really cool though? More featured than even Moo ??

try the demo, it has the ship creation. You don't have access to all the weapons and engines and stuff in the demo without researching it, but you can tell that it is very robust. I could see spending a lot of time just making ships.

what do you guys think of the economy/industry system in the game? is it something really simplified or is there some guts to it?

The industry and economy functions of this game are not very complicated. At the same time they are not overly complicated! The production ability of a planet correlates to its population. This can be affected on any individual planet by building factories and market centers, which boost those attributes for that planet. One can also research better factories and market facilities, as well as adjust the overall budget for your civilization between research, social, and military spending. Taxes can be adjusted as well. Trade factors into the equation quite heavily, as multiple trade routes can be established, these can give a big economic boost. Finally there are unique structures and resources that can be exploited to give your civilization an overall advantage in a given attribute. This is the limits of my understanding, as of yet. The game may have more depth than this, but I am still a beginner!
