Anyone bite?

Very tempted however lot of reports saying major fps issues on variety of rigs. It is a beta of course.

I'm going to hold off at least for now.

I hope that they actually shorten the tech tree. With previous galciv games there were so many techs that every tiny little piece felt like it added up to nothing. I think choices should make bigger impacts instead of adding tiny little pieces to a puzzle. I like the rock paper scissors feel of Company of Heroes.. if you go sniper in the beginning you could dominate, but if the enemy happen to go with bikes you are screwed. But if you would have gone with rifleman then they are screwed. It's a constant game of trying to keep up and/or stay ahead. While with galciv every little tech added up to something that felt insignificant.

Haven't done games for sometime and I don't know about the game. But the name suggests it's something like Master of Orion I played in ancient times. I loved that game, possibly my favorite game ever. I'll take a look into this one.

As much as I loved GC, I would agree. But really the joy came from ship design. Kind of like playing with legos. On top of that was a really fun 4x that probably didn't excel in any other area.

I'm not familiar enough with MOO to comment on a comparison there but I would say they are pretty different games.

I found GalCiv quite similar to MOO. I like Gal Civ better, because the AI is far superior, but the game play is very similar between the games.

I'm a little bummed that they switched from squares to hexes in GC3. It cuts down your movement options from 8 directions to only 6 directions, and makes you go in funky directions because of it.

Playing with ship designs was fun. I always tried to make mine look really cool, birdlike. 'course how they looked was meaningless, you could just pile everything onto a cube, with engines and guns pointing the wrong way, and it would be fine.

Galciv plays a lot more like civilization in space than it does MoO.

I hope they add a nice campaign. I know I'm probably in the minority but I prefer playing campaigns than stand-alone scenarios or randomly generated games.

Bought it last night, played for a couple hours. Research trees look promising, ship designer is even better, and I like the planet specialization bonuses. Looks really promising, but current content isn't there and planets are broken currently (see population pressure approval tanking). Considering time restrictions, I'm holding out now for final product. Very, very happy/excited for this.

Sounds like it's in more of an Alpha stage than a Beta (feature incomplete etc).

I'll be keeping it on my radar but still withholding my cash for now.

I'm still running Vista, so I'll probably hold off until I build my new rig once Skylake is out.
