Gainward FX5900 Ultra 256M @ 520.00

Last time I paid $500 for a Video card is when I bought an original 4 meg Matrox Millennemium w/ a 4 meg daughter card and that will be the last time I do.

Fastman,

Isn't it strange that any of us have EVER paid such crazy high prices for the "latest" PC hardware upgrade. I remember once when my brother bought 8 mbs of system ram and paid $300.00!

Oh well...we all have to have some fun and PCs are a fun and interesting hobby. I'd rather spend money on new video cards than drink it all up or gamble it away (not that I don't enjoy a few beers or a little gambling here and there)!

Here's to $520.00 video cards!

Regards,

Bud

if $500 is something you don't spend on video cards.. then don't come in here to crap threads.. geez

nvidia marketing does their research before they sell stuff at $500

only 2% of the market will buy the top of the line card... and 90% of the 2% will pay for it whether it's $300 or $500....

ya 2% seems kinda high but when you think about it, very few people have the bills to put down on this card, and after that only a small fraction of those people are stupid enough suckers to actually spend it..

Why pay this much for a card when no game will get close to testing it until Doom. By October, december the card will be around $300. Everybody has their own priorities, but the GF4s at ~$100 are starting to look pretty good.

heh, this isn't hot.

I just picked up a 9800 pro 128 for 275 on the fs/ft forums. Half the price of this... and probably 5/10% slower... maybe.

cheers 🙂

OK, that's certainly not a way to measure it...

Does this one take up an additional PCI slot? I'm interested in an FX5900 but I can't sacrafice one of my PCI slots. Are there any FX5900 Ultras that don't also take up the 1st PCI slot or will I have to settle for a regular FX5900 non-ultra, in order to retain the ability to use that 1st PCI slot?

Doesn't look like it. Why not go for a Radeon?

Nvidia kinda reminds me of Kmart. When Walmart came to town Kmart responded by remodeling the store and raising prices. Today there's a Walmart on every corner and Kmart is an abandoned building. I hope that Nvidia wakes up and realizes it's all about competition before it's too late. 🙁

Not really a very good comparison!

I don't understand how people are filling up those PCI slots these days? My motherboard (Soyo Dragon KT400 Ultra) and most modern motherboards have everything built in. Great sound, LAN, RAID, USB 2, and many have Firewire also. All of my PCI slots are empty!

Because many people buy the less expensive motherboards ($70-$100) or have older motherboards that do NOT have all of the extras that your motherboard has. And some people would rather use older parts (soundcard, lan card, etc.) that they already have instead of spending more money on a more expensive motherboard.

I have a Shuttle AK35GT (KT 333) motherboard that I bought a year ago. I have 5 of my PCI slots filled - LAN card, Soundblaster Live soundcard, 56K modem (for backup in case my broadband connection goes out), TV tuner card, and an ATA 133 card for extra IDE ports (came free with my hard drive).

i pci use 1 and only 1, perhaps two if i put a tv-card in a box, but other then lan, which is included on decent mobos, filling up 5 or 6 is just crazy....
