The Geforce4's beat the FX5200 and FX5600 to hell. If you wait for the sub-100 TI4200 deals, than that makes the deal even better.

I dont think this is a "hot deal."

these aren't meant to go up against the gf4s, the gffx5600 only beats the gf4ti4200 in AA/AF tests how do you expect a 5200 to even compare?....they are more like gf5mx

man these naming schemes kept getting more and more confusing :)

To sum it up:

First, you don't want to even think about the 5200 - it's the new MX.

Then, you don't want to get a card from Gainward, with their nomenclature, which is tasteless at best, misleading at the worst...

ViperV990: I agree completely with your analysis of the 5200's. I'd also like to know more about your views regarding Gainward's nomenclature. Care to elaborate?

"5200" and "5600 Ultra" are like the dreaded MX series. a Ti4200 spanks both of them in tomshardware's latest review

not to mention FX's are prolly noiser and possibly hotter

uh, just because they have crappy "nomenclature" that doesn't mean they're a sucky company. They may have a great product (I don't know that b/c I really don't care) but you can't say a company is "bad" based on the way they name their products!

I have 2 things to say about Gainward: Geforce 4 Ti 4200 64mb and checkerboard crash.

(For those that know what I am talking about, they did replace my card.)

Had the same problem here. I've done some research into that and it seems that only our card line was affected and very few other models were affected. They were RMAing quite quickly after admitting to their messup, and I would not instantly label them a "bad company". They've put out solid products (Ti500s) in the past and hopefully will continue to do so.

I've got the Gainward Ultra 700 (Ti4400) 128mb "Golden Sample" and it's been rock solid and trouble free since I purchased it close to a year or so ago. It's a brand I would highly recommend, IMO.

Yeah, I second that. I have Gainward GF3 ti200 Golden Sample with 128mb DDR. I love this thing. It shows me details I never even knew existed.

I would say that the 5600's are quiter than a Geforce4, and the FX5200's are pretty much noiseless, at least the ones with just HS, and no fan.

Although I'm about to try out a 128MB ATI 9500 Pro, I currently have Gainward cards in my systems:

System 1: GeForce4 Ti4200, 128MB
System 2: GeForce2 Pro/450, 64MB
System 3: GeForce3 Ti550, 64MB

Obviously, I don't have any problems with Gainward. Quite the contrary, I clearly think they put out fine products. (Albiet, with caveats about the MX and FX series.) It's just that I'm not aware of any issues regarding their "nomenclature." That's why I'm interested in ViperV990's take on it.

An example of the nomenclature he is talking about would be this card:

Gainward GeForce3 PowerPack !!! Ti/500 XP 128MB DDR JUMBO

Which is in fact a GF3 Ti200 even though the name has Ti/500 in it.

My impression of Gainward's nomenclature is that they'd slap some Kanjis on their cards to make them look faster than they really are...

Back in the GF4 days they had MX cards branded as "Pro" and Ti cards branded as "Ultra." Now think about how someone with a GF2 Pro - which wasn't much slower than a GF2 Ultra - would get ripped off if he were to get a GF4 "Pro" thinking he were getting a slightly clocked down "Ultra."

Of course marketing is only one side of a company, but since there're other companies out there that don't use this kind of flashy "marchitechture" I prefer buying from those other companies.
