I'm under the impression that they were concerned about death threats and harassment.

I don't see how the school can punish them in any way for something they did off of school property. The First Amendment applies when you're not on school grounds.

Schools have a right to discipline students for off campus activities outside of school hours too. At least in California they do. Get into a fight off campus a mile from school and an hour after school ends, you can be expelled.

Offensive speech is Constitutionally protected. A public school which decides that it's policies supersede the First Amendment does so at it's peril. If the school kicked the girls out they had better hope a lawyer doesn't come calling.

It's been happening more often that schools will punish students for IOC campus behavior including social media posts. I'm not sure the legality has been worked through yet. Similar to videotaping the police.

In this case it sounds like the girls left school due to the reaction of their classmates. Which they brought on themselves IMHO

If they left because they got grief from their peers then I they got what they deserve, however it's hard to imagine if burning a cross is acceptable legally that two girls off campus would be denied First Amendment rights. Sure they deserve all the ridicule they get, however that is completely separate from Constitutional issues.

Yep. The article doesn't make it at all clear what actually happened. If the girls' peers are ridiculing them or they feel ostracized, that's simply the result of their own actions and I have no problem with that. If the school tries to kick them out or otherwise punish them, I have a big problem with that because like their speech or not, they have a first amendment right to free speech and if I were them I'd be hiring a lawyer and suing the school. The article is terrible though (no surprise, it's huffington fail) so we don't really get the details.

So the families got death threats in response to something extremely stupid two teenage girls (not exactly a group known for well-considered actions) posted on youtube, and your faith in the US is improving? I agree that the comments were offensive, but death threats? Sounds like something that might happen in some Middle Eastern country.

Unless you are actually employed by a school system you may not be aware that the anti-bullying efforts are a booming business in education much like diversity training or sexual harassment training are in the business world. I'm not sure why anyone would be forced to keep their disapproval to themselves. If the girls left because they felt like idiots because they were, then that's on them. If they were threatened then that would be unacceptable because we've gone into the "swinging the fist beyond the end of the nose".

The reality is that we really don't know what's going on and we're speculating.

A guy made a video reply to her video explaining why it wasn't racist. He just so happened to be black as well and reiterated that there is a difference between normal black people who are active members of society, and the ones who choose to separate themselves from society.

Nothing racist about that. I've been in line at the grocery store and seen a lady using her food stamp card to get cash back and then buying god knows what with it.

People need to stop crying racism everytime something racial pops up.

Just look at that ESPN guy who was suspended for using a well known saying in reference to 'linsanity'. Lots of people have chinks in their armor... some don't. Move on. Learn the difference between racial and racist. Learn what context is.

I don't know why people have a hard time understanding the concept of context? "beloved patriot in the armour" when describing weaknesses in the military not racist. "beloved patriot in the armour" when describing the play of Jeremy Lin, racist.

Those girls were just trying to get internet famous by being hateful. They had no clue society would object.
