I had tubes put in and out a couple of times when I was a kid. If I went swimming and got my head underwater, I would almost always get an ear infection. Eventually though, the tube in my left ear left a permanent hole so they had to slice open behind my ear, pull my ear forward, and graft a piece of skin over the hole. Luckily I haven't really had that many problems with my ears since then (age 10 was final surgery, I'm 26 now). I get an ear infection about every couple years still, but ABs clear it up and they are never as bad as when I was a kid.

You're not supposed to go swimming with tubes in!

I usually pinch my nose and blow air as if it were plugged.
A doctor once told me that's not safe. Instead, he told me to pinch my nose and swallow, hard. That works very well for me. If you get a pressure imbalance after doing that, you can carefully try blowing a little air the other way.

I can't remember if I had tubes in or out at the time. I was pretty young. I think I got ear infections after swimming when the tubes were out though.

After the tubes come out your ENT should be able to tell you when the eardrum has healed up and its safe to go swimming again.

That's probably what happened but I really have no idea. I was very young.
