This really sucks for me. I do not upgrade my computer often and when I do, I usually do not have much money to spend on one. My old computer was an Athlon Thunderbird 1.4 with 512 mb Pc2100, EPoX 8K7A and Geforce 3 Ti 200 that I had built two years ago. I had only about $250 to upgrade my computer this time so I chose to get something I can overclock. I have heard of amazing overclocks being done with the new Applebred durons and they were right in my budget. So I picked up an Applebred 1.6, Shuttle A35N Ultra and 2x256 Buffalo PC3200 ram sticks with Winbond CH-5 modules.

When I got my Duron it turned out to be an A core, a MIRGA to be exact. I knew it was going to suck. So far I have only been able to overclock it to 1800 Mhz stable with 200 FSB at 1.7 Vcore :( The Duron I recieved was green and not brown like the Athlon XPs and some of the other Applebreds other people have gotten.

What do you think I should do? I have heard of a mod to unlock the extra cache but I have also heard that when you do the mod, the chip overclocks worse.

Oh well. Moral of the story: I should have got a Barton....

Or just a 1700+. What were you thinking? Get a 1700+ that does 2.2+ GHz from FS/FT. It will kill whatever that Applebred with it's crippled cache could do.

I don't buy anything from FS/FT. I was hoping to get a B core and overclock it to 2.3 or so as other people were getting. I ended up with an A.

You could've hoped to get a 1700+ that does 2.3ghz from newegg. Sell it and order a T-Bred.

When will people learn, just because you hear of some "amazing overclocks being done" doesn't guarantee you will have the same luck, what where you expecting?

Also why are you using a 200MHz FSB, as far as I know the applebred durons are designed to run a 266 MHz FSB.

He means 200 as in 200 Mhz, 400 DDR.

Are the "B" cores Bartons with half the cache (ie 256K)? I thought all Applebreds had only 128K. I guess if the "B"s do have 256K it would be a sweet purchase. As you have seen, however, it is risky...

I think all applebred has 128K since having 256K would make it more like a T-bred.

You were thinking it was a steal if you could get it for cheap and get a great OC.
We've all done it!! I did it with a Sapphire 9600Pro that doesn't oc worth a crap.

Yea I guess that's it :p

Anyways I'm refundig it with Newegg since the restocking fee is only $6 or so dollars. I think I might pick up a Barton 2500+ or an 1800+ T-Bred. Or maybe I should wait for Thorton? Gah, too many choices.
