"In a recent statement from the man behind the recently released The Orange Box, Newell stated bluntly that the PlayStation 3 was "a waste of everybody's time". He clarified his statement, explaining that he felt "[investing] in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There's nothing there that you're going to apply to anything else. You're not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they've created".

Earlier this year, Newell said the PlayStation 3 was a total disaster in an interview with Game Informer magazine. "The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It?s really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted...I?d say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a ?do over?. Just say, ?This was a horrible disaster and we?re sorry and we?re going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it." "

He sounds pretty bitter to me.

In Sony's world all the good games would only be developed for the PS3, so complaints about the difficulty of programming with the architecture of the system is probably just wasted breath for quite some time into the future unless sales totally bottom out.

its to be expected, he can't even bring himself to pay to have his games published, much less ported. The orange box for PC is just that, an orange box with a cd and a single peice of paper.

Is he wanking on the Cell? I love Team Fortress and all, but it seems weird to say that the Cell Architecture is retardedly, hard to program for when he can't get stable Frame Rates on the 360.

No issues here except the lag.

Really? My orange box has barely left my 360's drive since it was released and I have never noticed frame rate problems or slowdowns.

Hm, I hear from plenty of other developers that it's really not that bad. I think he's just lazy.

A manual, at a minimum.

Newell likes to bitch about anything new and different but all the delays and issues with PS3 games suggest that something is up. Newell isn't the first to air his discontent with the PS3 architecture.

Undoubtedly, he's a bitter man, but do you have a non-Sony in-house developer source for your claim? Not to hate, but I've read differently.

Can't be too easy, everything using the unreal engine has been delayed, orange box was delayed, what else?

and no the purpose of this isn't to bash. I just thought it was interesting.

it's difficult to develop for, but Gabe is a whiny lazy man who doesn't want to have to put extra effort into developing for other systems. In his perfect world, he could simply port the code from the PC to all consoles with no effort. Wake up. Consoles never used to be PCs in a box, and while the 360 is essentially that, and thus relatively easy to port to and fro, the PS3 is a difficult but still tamable beast. Hopefully EA doesn't screw up the PS3 version, because if the PS3 is stable and sells well, then maybe that will wake Gabe from his dream world.

Queasy, as far as delays and time taken to get good games out, this is history repeating itself from the PS2 days. The first games were pretty much not of high caliber and were not necessarily stable or looked anywhere near what the PS2 was capable of. I think time will show the PS3 may end up going down that same path, in that once developers get comfortable with it, better quality games may start being released. At least, that's what history would say. Hopefully that holds true. But mostly, Gabe Newell a whiny, bitter individual.

My concern is not only the time and difficulty in programming the ps3, but also the cost. That seems to be another issue which led to Nintendo getting Monster Hunter instead of PS3. That game only matters in Japan but it will be interesting to see if this is a trend.

It will be for awhile until internal code libraries mature and there are cheap and dependable third-party libraries and engines to buy.

If Sony execs have any functioning brain cells left after all of the binge drinking they'll learn from this and make the PS4 just 2 x PS3 duct taped together.

The wii benefits tremendously from being an upclocked Gamecube: a developer on a budget can use existing GC tools, libraries, engines and any existing internal code to slap something together without much effort.

How much extra effort to spend on wii-unique features and using the higher clocked graphics card is up to the developer and their budget.

It isn't delays on just PS3 games. It is delays on cross-platform games like Stranglehold, The Darkness, Rainbow Six: Vegas, etc too.

oh i know, that's mostly what I was referring too: to all games in general developed on the PS3, regardless if they are exclusives or not.
As DaveSimmons said, once the mature third-party libraries are available, and once developers get comfortable, even if developing their own new engine, the delays won't happen. it takes experience with the system.

Yes, but when you're compounding a difficult system to develop for on top of a low user install base, are developers ever going to bother getting experienced with the PS3?

yes. at least, my guess is that quality 1st party titles, and titles from teams very dedicated to Sony (Kojima Productions), will help get the initial user install base to expand. So it may be a year before the ball gets rolling. That's my guess.

In PS2 numbers? Not likely any time soon.

Still, it's the only game console in Japan for "next gen" graphics so it should get some titles from developers there wanting to create games that the wii just can't handle.

Cross-platform games will also be profitable enough to justify their existence, leading to at least some mature code and tools, and developer experience.

Sony really seems to have dropped the ball on building momentum in year 1, but I think it's still a year too soon to pronounce the PS3 a complete failure. And (repeating myself) if Sony has any sense at all the PS4 will start off with mature tools and libraries inherited from the PS3.

I do hope they compete strongly enough this generation to keep MS honest. Once MS thinks they've won a market, prices creep up, products stagnate, and they become as arrogant as Sony was before the PS3 launch.

I want uncharted and killzone 2 for the PS3. That is all that I've seen that interests me. If those get really good reviews, I'll probably buy one I guess.
