Ok, this is like the bajillionth time this has happened. Either my ISP is crapping out AGAIN or our host's DNS server isn't resolving correctly. At any rate, if you guys could please tell me if mikhailtech loads, the forums load and meemsites loads, that would be great. I can't check my email either, that sucks, but I can FTP in via the IP. Unfortunately I can't access the website pages via the IP because there's some sort of internal routing so all I get is a default admin page. Another favor, if someone could please do an NS lookup for ns1.hn.org and tell me what IP comes back to you, that would be GREAT. Please help a fellow webmaster out ...

DOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I get 64.71.163.40, which is what NetSolutions has listed as the IP for mikhailtech.com

Now this is all nice and all but I can't access the friggin' site. Stupid DNS server must not be resolving correctly again. Does anyone know where/who can provide temporary proxy settings to bypass my ISP's settings until this problem gets resolved?

So are you having DNS problems, or routing problems? Can you consistently ping your default gateway? Can you ping your DNS server? If there are some sites that you can consistently get to and some that you cannot (yet others say that they are up), then do a traceroute to these sites to find out whose routers are dropping the packets.

Instead of temporary proxy settings, why not just manually enter someone else's DNS server in your ip configuration? I don't know where you're located, but you could try the following:

195.117.6.10
Warszawa, Polska
Teleglobe

199.166.24.1
Ontario Canada
UUNET

199.166.31.3
Florida USA
Sprintlink

199.5.157.128
Michigan USA
PSINet

204.57.55.100
Massachusetts USA
Verio

204.80.125.130
California USA
Los Nettos

216.13.126.116 - ?

These are from www.youcann.org, a rather interesting site.

ok, here goes:

ping mikhailtech.com = unknown host
ping 64.71.163.40 = request timed out
ping meemsites.com = unknown host
ping 140.239.225.221 = success

so how do I do a traceroute again?

I can't use any of those DNS servers because I connect through a LAN, so I need proxy servers and ports for manual configuration.

Well, here's what I got:

C:\>tracert mikhailtech.com
Unable to resolve target system name mikhailtech.com

If a ping or traceroute to 216.40.250.8 works, then change your DNS servers. If your system is set up as a dhcp client, you can still manually add DNS servers to override dhcp. Give it a try.. (let me know if you need to know how to do this)

Connecting through a LAN just means your connection goes directly through an ethernet cable through some aggregation to a router somewhere. Off that router there's probably a dhcp server assigning you an ip address, default gateway, dns servers, etc. The proxy server configuration should just mean that in your browser's configuration you need to enter the proxy's ip address and the port it's listening on. It should have nothing to do with the DNS server ip addresses the dhcp server assigns you.

They both work. Like I said, I can FTP into our server and upload files using the IP address (216.40.250.8) but not the domain name. That's why I just posted a site news update telling people about the problems I'm having. I don't think we're using DHCP any more. We don't have any static IPs within the network, at least not that I know of. So what can I do?

Oh, and I don't get a Trace Complete message though and I don't see the C:\> again, so I guess it's not done. But it's kinda hanging there ...

EDIT: nevermind, it finished ... can I do some sort of cut & paste to show you the results? Or is that info irrelevant?

If you do not have a static ip, then your network is using dhcp. It's either one or the other. What OS are you using?

Not relevent unless the trace failed somewhere along the way. (You'd see a bunch of "*"..

Sorry, I'm a n00b as you can tell. I'm running Win2k pro.

No worries 🙂

Right-click My Network Places and select Properties.
In the new window, right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties.
In the new window, click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and select Properties.
Does it say "Obtain an IP address automatically"?
Below that, does it also say "Obtain DNS server addresses automatically"?
If so, change to "Use the following DNS server addresses", and manually enter one or two of the ones I suggested in a previous post.
Click "OK" in all these windows to apply the settings.

Let me know if that changes your browsing behavior.
