GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 rev 1.3 + i5-3550S POST problem

I have a Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 (rev. 1.3) motherboard and Intel i5-3550S CPU. I was told the motherboard has BIOS versions F11 or F12 which, supposedly, have Ivy Bridge support. But, the motherboard does not POST with the CPU. I bread-boarded the motherboard outside the case with just CPU and one memory stick -- have not installed in the case at all. So, there is no issue of shorting. The fans (CPU, PSU) spin for 10+ seconds then stop, and restart. This goes on repetitively until the power is turned off. There is no video at all. I have tested with both the HDMI and VGA connections. Since the graphics is integrated, there is no change in video screen either.

Is this most likely due to motherboard not supporting the CPU or is the board faulty? I do not have any Sandy Bridge CPUs to update BIOS on the board.

I have used two PSUs one of which was definitely tested to be working -- used earlier with another board. The CPU was working on another board which had (dual channel) memory issues (OS crash and reboots).

What's the significance of faint/low volume beeps from speaker? I get continuous loud beeps without any RAM but very short beeps (one or two?) that are barely audible in a quiet room.

Can anyone, please, shed some light on this? Thanks.

Check your ram, is it seated properly in the correct slots (check manual)?

Else it's either an old bios (but I think that would be unlikely since there is support since version F8) or the mobo is defective. But my money is on the ram.

Thanks coffeejunkee,
I have checked seating of RAM, and CPU several times. Gigabyte BIOS download page lists only F6, F10, and up. There is no mention of F8 for the revison 1.3 or revision 1.0 boards. Looks like the support for 22nm CPUs is introduced in F10 and only the F12 BIOS update comments mentions specifically anything about Ivy Bridge processors. Wonder why they specify 22nm CPUs in F10 and Ivy Brdige CPUs F12. Probably due to stepping difference?

Yes sorry, I was looking at the D3 without the H. But for the D3H the F10 bios update brings 22nm cpu support, and it's well over a year old. E1 is the normal retail stepping so I assume the earlier bios updates are for engineering samples but I would be surprised if the E1 stepping wouldn't work with them.

Sure about the ram? It should be in the slots furthest away from the cpu (labeled 1 & 2, slots 2 & 4 counting from the cpu)...if it is I can't really think of anything else that could be the problem. Without a second setup it's probably impossible to find out...

Coffeejunkee, thanks again for the quick reply. I tried all the RAM slots. I just went and tested again with the RAM in the slot farthest from CPU again. Same results without video and POST. I still hear the same very low volume beeps (I think two).

Also as I mentioned in the original post, without RAM modules I get the expected long beeps indicating no RAM.

I am waiting on a Celeron CPU to be shipped so I can update BIOS and test. But there is delay due to holidays. :-(

Looks like your stuck between a rock and a hard place currently. I guess you have a couple of options. Buy a cheap Sandy Bridge chip, borrow one from a friend, or possibly RMA the motherboard.

Dependant on where you live it's possible a local fellow member might be able to help you out in your time of need....Doesn't hurt to ask at least :)

Is there a sub-forum for local help on anandtech? I am near Milwaukee, WI, USA if anyone is willing to help.

I already ordered a Sandy Bridge CPU. Still waiting to be delivered.

Not really....But I guess you could post in the Computer Help sub-forum and see if anybody is willing to let you borrow a chip for the flash. It doesn't look like you live in an area without hope at least.

Maybe make a need help with bios flash in Milwaukee, WI area thread. Guess you could offer a little something in return if needed. I'd help you out but I'm in CA :)
