I recently had my friend order a bunch of computer parts from Newegg to build his system. He decided to go with the GA-K8N Pro mobo and an AMD 64 3000+ cpu. after connecting all the pieces togethor in his new case I began to try installing WinXP.

During bootup the bios seems to recognize an 80 gig hard drives as 8000 MB hard drives which I believe translates to 8GB?

Well needless to say the WinXP install recognized them as 8000MB also. When I got to the part where it asks if I want to create a partition I choose yes and choose the maximum size and hit enter. Without giving me an error or anything it sends me back to the screen that shows my unpartitioned 8GB hard drive.

I tried creating the partition again and again it just sends me back. I've tried this with 2 different 80GB drives.

I tried going to the giga-byte website to get some information on this mobo but their support online is next to nothing. btw his hard drive is a " Excel Stor 80GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive, Model J680" IDE Ultra ATA100. I'm not sure if that will help but I'm kinda in the dark when it comes to installing WinXP on an AMD64 Mobo.

First double-check the drive's jumpers to ensure they're not set for a capacity-limited arrangement. Next, go into the Gigabyte's BIOS and try having it re-detect the drive.

If that checks out ok, and if you have a different hard drive available, I suggest you try that. You're the first person I've heard of who's got an Excel Stor drive. The Hitachi 120GB model with the ATA/100 interface and 8MB of cache is ok, if you want an alternate. I got one for my little sister, and it's a little lethargic compared to what I'm used to (15000rpm Cheetah) but it's supposed to be one of the best 7200rpm ATA drives and has a 3-year warranty.

Hope that helps :)
