It has passed overwhelmingly everywhere it's been on the ballot.

People don't want it. Understand?

Change "People" to "People in traditionally religious conservative states" and I might agree with you. This would get shot down in California and many other states that make up a huge percentage of America.

Thank you for proving me wrong...are you disputing that there are equally many states this would NOT pass in?

i think that Oregon is anything but a conservative state and it passed with an overwhelming majority over there, even with the strong campaigning that some organizations did in that state...
i think its fair to say that if this passed pretty overwhelmingly in a state like Oregon, i'm sure it could possibly pass in a state like California..
i think the questionable states would be any state that vote 60+% democrat..
besides, those i think every state in the union would pass this...

I mean look at it this way. That is a pretty strong margin, it leaves no doubt as to what the people want.

That just makes it sadder. I am not gay by any stretch of the imagination, but I see this as a referendum on intolerance, and intolerance is clearly winning.

Its intolerance no matter what side you sit on. That's the way opinions are.

the way I see it people supporting gay marriage are intolerent of my beliefs.
WTF! Do you actually believe that gay couples give a poo about your beliefs?!! I don't tolerate my gay friends. I love them like all my other friends. In addition, I don't really care (or even want to imagine) what they do when they go home. Then again I don't really think about GWB "tossing salad" either.

Your morals are just that . . . YOURS! Keep them to yourself and everybody will be perfectly happy. It's really not that big a deal if you want to "share" your opinion. But why must you meddle in the affairs of others that have absolutely NO effect on you?

That is quite possible, I guess I didn't think about it too much, I just assumed people were more open to the idea than they maybe are.

If so, that makes me sad...because majority or not, I think they are wrong.

People are close-minded and homophobic. Racist and ignorant too. Yeah I understand.

No you don't understand. The majority of people are not homophobic as your kind like to advertise, they have morals. Go push your agenda somewhere else.

You may view being anti-gay marriage as "moral", I personally see it as a milder form of homophobia. Homophobia is, obviously, the fear of gay behavior and gay people. The reasons I've heard opposing gay marriage usually seem to fall under the catagory of "it will hurt society". That is, by definition, homophobia. You are afraid gay marriage will destroy society for some reason.

*-phobia isn't a dirty word, except when it's an irrational, stupid fear. Personally, I think homophobia, in any form, falls under that catagory. Defend it all you like, but that doesn't change who you are.

If gay people can marry, then polygamists should be allowed to as well. A man could marry some ladies and throw in some fellas!

That's total BS and misunderstanding of the "multiple" definitions of morals. When you and your ilk say it . . . what you mean is conformity to established sanctioned codes or accepted notions of right and wrong. The problem is there's nothing inherently good or right about your moral code . . . or mine for that matter. The pivotal difference is that I do not FORCE you to comply with my moral code but you are ever eager to impose your moral code on me (actually everyone) by any means necessary.

In essence, unlike the typical gay couple . . . you and your ilk are the ones pushing an agenda. I don't know a single gay person or couple that wants anything other than EXACTLY what I have . . . happily married, kid, financial security, and equal protection under the law. It's a shame all those people voting for "moral values" are busy pushing THEIR agenda.

Having lived in both states, I found Oregon more conservative than California. Some Easterners tend to mistake Western independence for liberalism, but they're not identical stances by any means. While Californian immigration has made Portland, OR more liberal than it once was, the rest of the state remains strongly conservative.

And that's why we have states. Let California do what it wants, I don't care. It shouldn't dictate the policy for Oregon, Mississippi, Arkansas, etc, no matter how big the population of California is. I for one am glad that I have the freedom to NOT live in California.

this isn't suprising as how much of the population is gay? prolly in the ballpark of 10% maybe? I am just guessing.

Much less than that actually. Unless they actively recruit the number would eventually be zero because they don't multiply.

I have to say this - THAT POST WAS MINDNUMBINGLY STUPID.

Yes, but it is the kind of reasoning that leads to the success of these kind of measures.

A gay marriage ban would be denying the heterosexual population nothing. Most of them don't care. Why should they care? They aren't gay. Well most of them aren't gay. It isn't their problem.
What are the benefits of denying marriage to a same sex couple? Protecting the sanctity of marriage? Ha. I know people who are willing to lose their spouse before they lose their dog. Granted not all people are like that.
But people are selfish.
People who vote for measures like this are living in the past and will die out with the future.

I'd like to find a number of how many people voted for a ban on gay marriages and what percentage of the population it is. I was going to start a thread for this, but it seems like there are enough repeat threads going on as is so I am trying to avoid that.

Does anyone have these statistics?

Well, presumably it would be the same as the number of voters in the presidential election. And does it really matter? If you don't vote, you can't complain about the results.

This simply shouldn't be anybody's business but those going for the marriage, which should in fact be a civil union anyway, and leave marriage up to religious institutions. If most people didn't like blue, it wouldn't be fair to ban blue automobiles, because it's simply too bad on them.

I wonder of the folks in the 20's, 30's, 50's and 60's who were opposed to interracial marriage, blacks and women voting etc... all thought it would take a lifetime for the issue to be decided?

If I've learned anything in my short time in the West it's that the world (even the U.S) gets more liberal socially as time goes by. I'm not taking odds, but I am relatively certain that even with 80% of some states opposing gay marriage it will be legal in at least 50% of the states by 2020. Anyone want to take me up on it? :)

Don't forget New York and the general New England area. It's great talking to these eliitists. I just talk real slow and drawl my words out. They get so mad and impatient with my "ignorance", stick their nose up and prance all around like a rooster. It's incredible how many stereotype southerners as stupid.
