GA-965P-DS3 and Samsung SATA DVD RW low write speed

Hi everyone,

Please can someone offer some advice, I have the GA-965P-DS3 and a dual boot system with windows XP Pro and Windows Vista, I also have a Samsung 18x Sata DVD RW, but for some reason the drive only has a maximum write speed of 2.4x, but on the vista side it's up to 18x, I cannot understand why,

I was thinking i might have set it up wrongly in the bios, so I enabled ACHI and put the Sata ports 0-3 to native, but it hasn't made any difference,

Any advice would be fantastic,

Thanks in advance.

That's weird about the reported difference in write speeds. I'm not sure about what media you are using but the highest DVD-RW write speed of I know of is 4X. My DVD-RW's are only 2.4X max but I've had mine for years.

thanks for the reply, the media I am using are DVD-R 8x, but even when there aren't any discs in it the write is still only 2.4, Do i have to install sata drivers for the dvd burner? I am unsure what to do when setting up the bios for sata drives only.

Is the DVD-RW connected to an (orange) Intel or (purple) JMicron port?
Are the latest drivers:
Intel Chipset [intel_inf_8401010beta]
and/or
JMicron Controller [JMB36X_WinDrv_WHQL_R1.17.21] installed?
Both at: www.station-drivers.com
Also: try uninstalling the DVD-RW from Device Manager, then reboot to re-install.

Lokan: No I don't have any issues with the device manager

Vailr: the Hard Disk is connected to the Purple Port (sata01) and the DVD Burner is connected to the orange port (sata03) (should i have them both on the same colour?

I will install the above drivers you gave me thanks guys for your help.

I have moved both drives over to the purple one Jmicron one,

In the Bios I have the following:

SATA Port 0-3 Native Mode: Enabled
Onboard SATA/IDE Device: Enabled
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode: AHCI

are these configured correctly?

Have updated the drivers and no change. it's strange cause the maximum CD writing is 48x but the maximum anything with dvd is 2.4x

I am going to try moving both drives over to the orange (intel) ports now.

well it didn't seem to make any difference.... apart from i had to re-activate vista again through the phone ... which sata ports are best to use on this board?

ntemples,

I don't have the board, so I can't comment on what SATA ports are better than others. I've typically been told to use the non-JMicron in the past, but each board may be different.

As to the reason why you're experiencing what you're experiencing, the only other options I can come up with would be to make sure you have the latest Firmware for the ROM drive. I have 3 DVD-RW ROM's on my PC, one from Pioneer (IDE), and two from Samsung (one IDE and one SATA); all three of them burn the same DVD-R or +R disc at different speeds due to their various states of Firmware.

Lokan: thanks for your help, i have updated the firmware of the DVD burner to the latest version, I agree about the different disks being detected at diffferent speeds by the burner, so I will try it out with some other brands of dvds.

As for the SATA setup, I have found that having both drives on the Jmicron (purple) ports seems actually slower on the vista experience test, it has dropped from 5.7 to 5.2, so I am stumped, I don't know wether or not to put them both on the Intel Ports now.. have any other people using the GA-965P-DS3 set up their sata drives this way?

You're welcome. I wish I could come up with a better solution. Burning seems to be so hit or miss when it comes to consistency :/
