Question:
In "Intel 845 DDR Motherboard Roundup" Dec. 2001 was written to a.m. motherboard that for the GA-8IRXP all three DIMM slots were populated with DDR266 and the board was working stable.
Was this done by use of 3 double sided DDR-DIMMs or was it by using 1 double sided DDR-DIMM and 2 single sided DDR-DIMMs as described for other Intel 845 DDR Motherboards from different manufacturers?

What is the difference between these 2 types and how can it be recognized?

any word on this? I just reveived my board and was tripped up by this disclaimer of which I have never heard before. Once I was going to get all my components installed I was just going to install my 3 double-sided dimms and see what happens.

Well, as far as I know the i845D can handle a total of 2 GB DDR memory on 4 memory banks. Any doublesided memory module takes up 2 banks, so you would at most be able to put 2 doublesided modules in your system. Boards with 3 slots give you extra flexibility in that you could fill 2 of the slots with 2 single side modules.

There used to be a handy formula, which said that whenever memory size is doubled modules flipflop between singlesided and doublesided format, e.g. 64MB = doublesided, 128MB = singlesided, 256MB = doublesided, 512MB = singlesided etc. I'm not a 100% sure if that still holds true, though. It fits the memory I have, however (SDRAM: 2x 64MB doublesided, 1x 128MB singlesided; DDRRAM: 256MB doublesided).

Hope that helps.
