G92 May have heat problems.

Ah man.. I hope that's not true. I was hoping I can finally get a high-end GPU that has single-slot cooler and move my computer to a SFF/mATX.

My guess would be the single slot cooler. Too bad if that is indeed the case. It would have been nice to see that they were capable of having a high end card that only requires a single slot. As it is, my case is stuffed tighter than a Thanksgiving turkey in certain places, and the dual slot cooler isn't helping.
 
Weren't Inquirer/Fudzilla stories false until proven otherwise? They have (for example) already claimed that G92 is new enthusiast card with over 1 teraflops shader power, G92 is 8700 GTS, G92 is 8800GT... etc.

Having said that, it wouldn't surprise me if both ati and nvidia have problems getting their high-end cards back to single slot. Sure, they will consume less heat at a given performance level with the 55/65 nm process, but they will want ever more performance to keep up with crysis/alan wake/sup com III/etc
 
I believe the g92 is a midrange card that falls in performance somewhere between the 8600gts and the 8800gts. I think the days of single slot high end cards are gone for good
 
it should be extremely close to 8800gts in performance simply b/c the ati cards will be very close to 2900xt performance.

Competition is good but I don't think that's how it works.
 
Maybe it is just me, but I don't mind the double slot cooling device. But, I generally don't have a ton of add-in cards. I am certainly in favor of creating a cooler running card, but whether it takes one space or two makes no difference to me.

Indeed. And preferably one which vents heat OUT of the damn box. Video card heat vented into the PC is a big pita

sorry, you're right. nvidia has been stuck without an upgrade for 8800gtx for the past year because they're just clueless. either that, or they didn't need to come out with anything better due to lack of competition.

Do you really think that nvidia will allow ati to put out a similarly-priced midrange card that significantly outperforms them? Nvidia has announced some rough numbers, but they could very easily factory overclock their units to be competitive if necessary. Sorry, I would type more, but my 18 month old keeps trying to "help" me, forcing me to retype this sentence 4 times now 🙂

Not saying competition isn't there. But that's not the only thing that drives these 2 companies. How would Nvidia know what ATI has and vice versa before designing these cards? Unless of course they're spying on each other illegally or working together, they really don't know.

Your comment prior to it made it seem like these companies knew what the other company is going to do before releasing a card which isn't true imo.
 
they both leak approximate numbers all the time. all I meant was that nvidia has been dominant for a while, it's highly unlikely that ati suddenly pulled their heads out and produced a card that is so dominant that nvidia can't compete with it, esp in the midrange. what I don't get is that both companies have had a freakin' YEAR to come up with a decent midrange card. How could both of them completely ignore such an important part of the market??? Is anybody from nvidia/ati reading this? Seriously, it's sad that we can't think of ANYTHING GOOD to recommend to somebody at the $150 or $200 price point. I half-heartedly suggested 1950 (pro and xt), but let's be real here: those cards are OLD and will very soon be obsolete. it takes a miracle to even find a new 1950xt any more. I was excited about 2900 pro release, but it's done so well and is so limited in quantity that it's still selling well above msrp, closer to $300 mark.

sorry for the off-topic rant. ati is desperate for a win, and it appears that they will be strong with the upcoming generation of cards IF they can release in a timely manner and avoid manufacturing issues.
 
I strongly believe each company has planted employees at the others company. Can I prove it? Heh, no more than ATI or Nvidia can.

That is one conspiracy theory I have no problems with. As for heating problems? That would suggest a need for higher clocks than planned for. Wouldn't be the first time a company has increased clocks in a suicidal attempt to keep up. Generally you get a competitive product that is a little louder and hotter - no biggie.

Of course they do not have approximate numbers before designing their chips. It's rumor mill nothing much to go by. If they designed it before these rumors they would be late to the party giving your competitor the edge of releasing the card first.

that makes a LOT of sense, notice 2900xt's late/slow release. It would be nice if ati took some of nvidia's money this time around.
