G84 and G86 would be consumers.

I wasn't aware any nvidia parts had seperate 2D clocks to begin with! I thought only ATi had those.

For a desktop if the cards run cool I don't think it matters unless the fan is loud.

Remember back in the day video cards never used to clock down (IIRC the 5800U started this).

That would be because they use more sophisticated power saving techniques than simply clocking down (which wouldn't be a really good strategy for dealing with Aero full time).

Are you referring to some internal gating like mobile parts? Like 2/3 of the shader units shut off but the clock speeds stay up sort of thing?

That would most likely be what is happening, but no-one knows the exact details of how it works yet.

Hmm... well the "rumor" certainly will need confirmation when they launch. If it ends up being true I would definately stay away from them until the issue is resolved.

Uhhh AFAIK none of the 8-series cards released to date have separate 2d and 3d clocks, so I dont know why the midrange cards would be any different (excepting the mobile parts of course).

Yeah the GTX and GTS run full clocks all the time right now.

Edit- ahh I see- mobile parts to save battery life.

Both my dads 6600GT and my 7900GS have 2D clocks. As I expect most other cards do in Nvidia's range - just get a few oddball ones like the 7600GT which I think kept the same clocks.

afaik Nvidia has had seperate clocks for 2d\3d since the NV30. I know my 5900Ultra and 6800 had them. I am sure my 8800 has it as well. But since I am not using anything to overlock the card, i dont get to see what it is set at. My 5900's 2d clock defaulted to half the max 3d clock.

So the core sits at 450 and the 2d clock was 225.

If the parts arent clocking down, i bet it is more a driver issue than hardware. Drivers probably making the hardware believe it is in 3d mode full time and thus dont power down.

Everything from NV30 through the last of the 7-series had independant 2d clocks and fan control. However, none of the cards in the 8-series to date have 2d/3d clocks or fan settings by default.

None of the 8 series clocks down either? I didn't know that.

It doesn't make much sense to me to interpret the fact the subsequent revisions might have some of their power saving features tweaked as evidence that a 'bug' exists in the original version.

For my x850xt I use ATI Tray Tools to set the fan speed to change with GPU temperature. Like BFG said, as long as the fan isn't loud outside of gaming, I'm not really going to care.

If we were talking about a huge reduction in power, that would be one thing, but this just seems like much ado about absolutely nothing.

With Aero, 3D will be on pretty much 100% of the time anyway.

When was the last time the Inquirer was right about anything? The last "breaking story from insider knowledge" from them was about how the R600 was shipping, to go on sale the first week of march and that it would be a 65 nm die size.

They are sometimes correct. But this article here, was about 3 floors north of ASSUMPTION.
Big time...

This guy Charlie ASSumed that since the 5800 through 7900 series downclocked for 2D, then the 8 series MUST be broken.

I'll admit, I like BS'ing about some of the rumours that fly out of the inq's butt, but stuff like this I can't stand.
