It won't end until we can do photorealistic graphics in real-time...which is why I love the video card market. 😀

After photorealistic comes post-realistic.

In other words, when computers can kick nature's ass in terms of calculating the laws of physics down to quark (and lower if there is any) level, as well as the complete data of chemistry and all other things.
Then computers come up with more stuff that reality can't do. Let's wait for the day when lighting complexity surpasses that of the stuff that comes from the sun.

Then it won't look "natural". Therefore will revert back to not looking the best it can be, which is "real-like".

It will stop when you absolutely cannot tell the difference between real and rendered.

I did, try reading benchmarks. According to benchmarks(and my own experience) HL2 runs smooth at high res with full eye candy. SLI'd 6800U's offer less than 7fps more. I'm sorry, but you are wrong. The only thing you'll notice with SLI is a hole in your wallet.

G70 on June 8? Meh. I did not feel excited by it, and I think its going to start the paper release and price gouging cycle once again. I surprised to see how many of us here are willing to drop a grand for video cards every generation to play the same boring FPSes with better graphics than the previous title. It's kind of funny IMO.

R500 in Xbox360 doesn't have 48 pipes, it has 48 ALUs (basically, math units). In fact, the "pipes" of today's cards increasingly aren't the same as those of previous generations. GF6 may have topped out at 16 "pipes," but it also had 6 vertex shaders, making for (very roughly) 22 total. R500 appears to have 48 total. New generations tend to double performance basically by doubling pipes/ALUs/processing power, so we can almost expect the true next gen of the GF6 to have ~44 ALUs.

That said, I'm not sure if we'll see a straight-up doubling of core size/units with the upcoming PC cards, as this will "only" be a refresh for nVidia (tweaking the SM3+ GF6 for higher performance), not like ATI's more significant redesign (moving from SM2 to SM3+ while also raising performance). G70 may well be what's in the PS3, but we may not see it on the PC until the next next gen (late 2006/early 2007), alongside the PC version of R500 (aka R600).

good to see someone that knows what they are talking about and does more than repeat marketing BS......

I think he's probably saying he's seen a high res benchmark of HL2 where the X850XT PE performans within 7fps of 6800U SLI, and he may well have.

The problem with this logic is that 6800U SLI offers MUCH larger advantages on many games where ATI didn't pay the developer $6,000,000.00 to showcase their product.

Because you don't really get that performance. 2 6800U's in SLI is not natively supported in games, it requires drivers to make it work. Even then, it doesn't work well, and has overhead. The G70 won't have overhead. On paper they are both twice the power of a 6800U, but the G70 will actually be twice as powerful while the SLI'd 6800U's aren't.
Sli works for all games - "it requires drivers", well, duh . . . it DOES work very well according to the vast majority of adopters, and we DON'T know how powerful the G70 will be
At this point, PPU's will become more important than VPUs and CPUs. The level of graphics I'm seeing in games running perfectly smooth on my video card now is amazing, I can't imagine needing a video card twice as powerful.
you need an imagination upgrade . . . we NEED videocards that are 4x more powerful to run the next gen of games at hi resolution and with AA/AF

Fact is, SLI isn't necessary and doesn't help. You get 100fps, I get 90, doesn't matter. Refresh rate is 85 so we both see the same thing. SLI offers nothing noticeable in-game. Do you really want to spend $600 extra for futuremark scores? Oh wait, does it even work with that?[/quote]ATi sure thinks SLI is "necessary" and has hopped on the bandwagon . . . in fact, expect dual core AND sli'd setups - if we are going to match the next gen consoles' gfx 😛

when i had the geforce4 TI-4600 i never imagined i would require a card twice as powerful but still today i am with a 6800U about 5 times as powerful! *sigh

Rollo got it, but apparently you missed it. Compare your SLI'd Ultras to the best video card on the market, the x850XT PE. Only 7fps gain. But let's move on, and look at what you posted. Pardon me, 15 fps. Oh wow. Good job. Again, you won't even notice the difference at all during play. Doom 3 performance doesn't even matter. It's locked to only display a max of 60fps anyway.

Having SLI'd ultras now isn't like having a G70. At least, you better pray it isn't, then the g70 will be a big disappointment.

first of all the, r520 will be the big disapointment as M$ will not allow ATI to release the "full version" of its Xbox360 GPU. . . .

g70 will be less of a disappointment, but still not "all" the PS3 GPU will be. 😉

But at least ATI fans will finally get SM 3.0 and 'SLI'

Wrong site for that type of nonsense. Fanboys rule here. Besides I prefer to think about how nice it will be to own one. I guess the big worry is that this is a pre paper launch aimed at killing the new xbox sales.

edit: why does every thread no matter how interesting turn into a sli slugfest?

Rumors had it that the g70 would be twice an ultra, right? Rumors had it that the 520 would be 3x an x800. I wouldn't be disappointed really if it were 1.5x, it's still 50% increase. Considering I already run all new games with all eye candy smooth as a baby's bottom, that's more than enough.

ATI's move to MVP is purely marketing, so ATI fanboys will jump on the bandwagon, it's still pointless. And I think it's retarded this generation of cards didn't have 3.0, but it may have been a business move to increase sales of 520, you think?

hmm those specs of 24pipelines and 1400mhz gddr3 arent that impressive. i wonder what the core clock is.

i mean i can hit 1200mhz easy on my 6800GT and 440core

pointless arguing anymore! this has turned into as bad as the previous thread about ATI cards.

They said in that article that volume production won't start until Q3 of this year...that's what, early to mid-Fall? I suspect that they're attempting to excite teh masses. 🙂 I'm sure 6-8 is impossible. There hasn't even been a paper launch yet and so little has been said about it.

Do you think the absolutely most powerful models (with the name Ultra Extreme or such) will come out right away, with the 6600GT counterpart being released later on?

Wouldn't it make sense to let the technology mature a bit, and then release the monster card and bring home the benchmarks?

The guy who buys 2 6800 ultras does not really have money issues and if noise is important will spend a fortune to deal with that. So when the next gen is released, he will be the first to buy. That way he will really have next gen performance. Only one way now to stay on top of the curve - spend lots. Big money now only keeps you on top until the next better thing comes along, stating otherwise is fud. Buy midrange if you want dollars for fps and upgrade more frequently. But back to the topic, it will be interesting to see what sm 3.0 with 3dc brings to the table.

One thing everyone seems to be missing . . . when he sells his pair of 6800Us, he will get 'top dollar' for a used card . . . as opposed to holding on to those 6800gts for an extra year to squeeze every last ounce of performance out of them.

what really bugs me is that a $350 console owner will soon have better gfx than a top-of-the-line sli'd g70 PC. 😛

SLId G70s will likely slaughter a console if games are released that can push them.

Remember the PS3 is a single G70, and the Xbox 2 is a single R500.

First off you know thats shitz gonna look badazz and be better then 2 6800 ultra sli ,plus we all buy more then we need ,what do you need 2 6800 ultras for? theres no game that will bring one to its knees with everything turned on,its all hype, but yet again you know were gonna spend that money so we can rest at night, and nvidia knows that people are phyco enough to do that,of course im gonna buy it so I can brag and laugh at my friend "your piece of shite 9800pro sucks"its all about bragging rights.

People really need to stop saying this as it's never been true. Here's how it works Kruptos:
1. Last night I installed Hexen2, a game from 1996. Oh noes! No profile!
2. I go to the nVidia driver control panel, use drop down to set non profiled games to AFR. Oh noes! It doesn't work, distortion abounds.
3. I go to driver control panel, switch to SFR SLI with drop down, play my game fine.
Pretty tough, eh? Took me a whole two minutes.

People really need to stop saying this, because anyone with eyes who can read can see single cards are pretty lame compared to high end SLI.

UT2004
Gee, 113fps for a X800XT PE vs 151fps for my 6800GT SLI.

Doom3
37fps vs. 68fps isn't a small difference either- I play at this setting, you don't.

Far Cry
36fps vs 53fps or 60fps. Again, I can play this setting easily, you can't.

Battlefield Viet Nam
61fps vs 83 or 94fps.

Actually it's not all just about bragging rights. 😛

If you're running a very high resolution display, SLI can be very helpful and even necessary in newer games. One of the posters in this forum with two 6800GT's noted that he still received slowdowns at 1920x1200 in Half-Life 2 at times.

The point is that yes, SLI costs a hell of a lot of money, probably too much, but it does have its place (and not just to make your e-penis larger).

Relatively few people. And that's why they have to pay quite a bit for that kind of performance, but for some people, it's worth it to them, and it's good that the option is at least available.

Not to be rude or anything, but will you be getting to the actual point your trying to make anytime soon? And also, why you feel you need to make this point and drive it home?
