You are comparing 3 years of refreshes of a part that was behind the directx specification and introduced no new features to a one year refresh of a part that fully supports the latest DX spec and has upped the IQ stakes as well (Transparency AA). There is no analogy here.

There's also very little chance of a 3 year NV40 refresh given WGF2.0/Longhorn requirements.
