I'm curious, do they have divx encoding utilities made for/optimized for mac? I would be interested to see if they did how a dual G5 could crank DiVX 5.1 with Vdub assuming the codec is available for that platform as well. A lot of folks question what good a super fast computer is, but the at the rate which I encode divx with the given quality settings a 3.3GHz P4 w/ 1GB Dual channel DDR 3500+ is not adequate. :D

YES.... Then go Build the Athlon FX system

(When the RIAA comes knocking on your door, you kindly let them in at present them to the wonderful MAC G5 you are using and Cannot have possibly downloaded all those songs they said you did, because Kazaa/WinMX do not work with the mac.. only Apple Itune's online and your "personal" cd collection ;) )

I'd rather get a Sony F717 over the G5. $700 with 3x zoom is too much for a 5mp camera. I'd rather get the f717 for $500-600 with a 5x zoom.

a 2.2Ghz can = sometimes > a 3.2Ghz P4 and usually tie with a non overclocked P4EE

P4 will not go above 3.2 until December when the Prescott core version of the P4 comes out.
If your like most people, save your holiday money, wait until January to make a real jump into computer upgrading. Right now updating little by little will not last you in the long run.

My recommendation wait until The Athlon 64/64FX is Mainstream and cheaper, with REAL registered PC3200(400mhz DDR) or maybe even DDR-2 RAM to come out. With newer/faster video cards around the corner and PCI Xpress its worth the wait. 3 months is not a long time so don't fret about it...unless you have some computational fluid dynamic experiments to complete and need the fastest system to do it with. :)

It sounds like you plan on using mainstream apps. There's no way the g5 risc processor (even in dual configuration with 1ghz fsb) is going to be able to out do comparably equiped high end pcs for divx encoding, or even video editing. Photoshop is a different story.

get a pc.

What are you talking about.. the G5 excels at video editing with FCP and the MPEG2 compression rate is supposed to be insanely good.. There's also a G5 enhanced version of DIVX in the works (with 64bit processing, optimized for dual cpus as well)...

G5 review

Keep in mind that they're still optimizing osX apps for 64 bit applications... That's optimizing.. Unlike the a64, many apps and the os itself ARE running 64bit mode.. Updates and patches are being steadily released so no waiting for MS to make a new OS...

I would. But I don't play games with my Mac. That is why I have a gaming rig.

The G5 kicks ass. I am probably going to be selling my dual G4 1.25Ghz machine in the near future to get a dualie 2Ghz G5.
