Me wana buy a Gaming mouse and have shortlisted the below( I am Right Hander):

Logitech G5 ( Lazer )
Logitech MX518 ( Optical )
Razer Copperhead ( Lazer )

Please can somebody clarify the below:

1] G5 ? I have Read somewhere that the G5 software installs Windows Media player 9 by default! I am using WMA 10, and I don?t want it to be swapped by WMA 9 ! IS this the case? Me uses windows XP with SP1 ( If this matters )

2] I am inclined towards MX518( though pretty old now and optical ) simply because it has Two-side thumb Buttons whereas G5 has only one ? Am I making an right choice by going out with the number of buttons as I really think two thumb buttons are needed in games!

3] Does the Lazer or Optical mouse uses/draw CPU power in any way ?

4] Is it true that these mouse decrease FPS in any game very Slightly ? Because their sensor Render in the Background of an game.

5] I know that all these mouse work without installing the software but still if I want to use software, does the software load everytime I Boot my PC ? Can I disable to boot everytime and also from the System tray ?

6] Does all these mouse good even for Normal Computer use?

7] Does these mouse suffer from any drawback ? Like Glitch/skip for a second or something similar ? OR when lifted from the pad it takes time to Re-detect.

8] Does these mouse works on all types of Mousepads ? Is their any specific color it doesn?t work on? ( I do not intend to invest in any kind of those expensive Mouse pads out there ) I currently use an Minimal nylon kind mousepad with Gel wrist support ? will it be sufficient?

9] I will be using this mouse on an LCD with Resolution 1280x1024( Native) ? Any pros with this ?

PLEASE NOTE:
I do not care the Looks!
I do not want Weight catridges either!
On-board memory is also not required
I don?t mind the Lesser DPI on MX518

I want an mouse that works great with intense gaming. + normal desktop and daily applications related.

1. I doubt it. In any case, you don't need the software, the G5 works fine by itself.
2. I'm using the MX518 and it's been good to me. The two side buttons are recognized in games as Mouse4/5.
3. Nope.
4. Even if it did, it's negligeable. You'd never notice it.
5. Yes.
6. Yes.
7. The problems I've had with Logitech mice is this. The buttons, after a while, may show symptoms of "double clicking", where the first click is merely the button scraping against the edge, but not actually detecting a click. The second problem is that the scroll wheel sometimes scrolls without the wheel turning over. Both can be somewhat temporarily fixed by either clicking really hard, or madly scrolling up and down.
8. Yes. Gaming mousepads are such gimmicks.
9. No pros or cons.

I vote MX518. G5 is missing a button. Razer mice makes my hand hurt.

Mx518 this coming from a competitive gamer mostly everything the above poster said was correct except that if you do go with a G5 you will need to update the firmware so that you can use it on dark surfaces

If you don't care about the DPI or the weight cartridges, I don't see why you shouldn't go for the MX518. I have a MX510 now and would've upgraded to a MX518, but I don't think that was worth it. The main thing I don't like about the G5 is the loss of the the thumb button. Also, if you use the nylon mousepad, the better teflon feet of the G5 won't matter that much. You should probably just go with the MX518, I've tried both that and the G5 and there isn't much difference in the performance, as as I can tell, just more features.

I own the MX500, MX510, MX518 and the G5 (since it launched ). I also play CS for 2-5 hours a day and play in CAL.

With the G5 sure you lose a thumb button but you actually gain a button because the wheel can be titled to the left and right each being a button. So the wheel is 5 buttons in one.

There has always been one problem I have experienced with mice throughout the years and that is that they could not keep up with my movements. When I hear somebody behind me I can do a 180 in a very short amount of time (.1-.2 seconds). With all of the mice I have used in the past the on screen movement would not keep up with the way I moved my mouse. If I slowly moved my mouse to do a 180 it would take 6 inches to do. If I did it the super fast way that I can it would take 6.5-8 inches. This could be lessened by tweaking settings here and there but for me it was never right and I dealt with it since I had no other option. With the G5 I do not have to do any tweaking at all. No matter how fast I seem to move the mouse around the on screen action keeps up.

I love the fact that I can put weights in the mouse also. I was one of those guys that would put pine wood derby lead weights in my mouse using a glue gun so it would weigh more. Now I don't have to :)

The only thing I don't like about the mouse is the shape. I wish the right side of the mouse was a little higher. After playing for many hours the right side of my hand starts to hurt a little.

I just got a G5 a few weeks back and like mcmikemc, I have to say it's really great. The mouse is really versatile and you can get the mouse for about 50 bucks these days. Considering it's one of the most heavily used peripherals on a computer, spending 50-60 bucks on a mouse isn't out of line in my opinion. If money is an issue, the 518 is not at all a bad way to go. You don't get all the extra shiny omglazergunzpewpewpew, but its a solid gaming mouse as well.

@ mcmickemc... can't do 180? I could do 720s with a generic optical mouse, but then I had the sensitivity at 20. Maybe you just need to turn up your sensitivity? Each mouse runs at a different speed.

Personally, I'd take the 518 over the G5 even now because of the thumb buttons, but I haven't used the side scrolling thing myself yet so I don't know how well those would fare. My main qualm about all the Logitech mice (or at least the 518) is the application button in the middle. I keep on pressing it, and it opens up a window on the desktop, minimizing the game.

What mouse did you own before? I owned and gamed with a mx300 for about 4 years and switched to the mx518 and its been about 1.5 years and i still cant get use to gaming with it. I find myself digging out my old mx300 to play CS 1.6 =x I TRY SO HARD NOT TO DO IT!!! IMO i would've been more happy sticking with my mx300 but since i spent the money.. im trying to make it worth while! Hope this helps. Bottom line.. TRY them and see how you like it. Borrow from a friend or something.

I think the application button on MX518 is a troublesome, so I guess I would really give it a try on G5, as the tilt wheel is new and I hope it is better than two thumb buttons!

tilt wheel is not better then the 2 thumb buttons. mx518 is my vote. But I think you are TRYING to get yourself to get the G5 becasue it's the lastest and greatest. To me LAZER is more of a gimick.

Laser mice are less sensitive to the surface you're using it on which can be a plus.

I'm partial to the Copperhead because I can use it on more than one machine without losing all my sensitivity preferences (onboard memory), but you mentioned that's not really a factor for you.

I'd try 'em all out if you can or at least play around with a floor sample at a retailer to see how you like the shape/feel of each one. Some people hate the Razer's feel..

As far as the software, the Razer app loads at boot, but I'm sure a couple simple changes in the Windows registry would solve that.

So when will one like the G5, but with two thumb buttons & no application button, be out? :)

BTW, just looking at a MX600 at Worst Buy on Black Friday, I thought it's two thumb buttons were in the perfect position. I think it was the MX518 that for me they were a little too far back, requiring me to bend my thumb more from it's normal resting and reach back (more work and slower). Plus on the MX518, don't you have to pull your thumb out of it's deeper thumb rest? I don't see the MX600 on Logitech's website thought, I guess replaced with the 610, with additional buttons to get in the way.

I've also looked at a mouse for sale in the past year (forget which) where they had moved the thumb buttons way down at the base of the mouse where they were hard to press. I hate that mfg's think they need to keep changing designs from year to year, moving buttons around and whatnot, just to be able sell a newer design. This vs. finding the best positions and keeping them there. Audio electronics and cell phones suffer the same problem.

So, Logitech, make the next G5 with the MX600/610's(?) two thumb buttons! :)

If you like the "palm grasp" feel that logitech sells then get the mx518. However i prefer razers because they emphasize on the tips of your fingers more, and a lighter overall faster mouse. They also offer some thumb+palm support on its grooves on the side if you decide on razer get a diamondback which is a better buy than the copperhead.

I had an LX700, bought a G5 and I'll never go back. It's extremely responsive, nice weight for sniping and snappy reaction. Zero lag.

I'm considering the new Razer Copperhead but haven't seen much discussion about them here. Anyone have one and have anything to contribute to the discussion?

Are they any more or less comfortable than the Logitech shape? I use the PC for many hours a day and using the mouse without hand cramping is a top concern. I am right-handed, but realize the Razers work for lefties as well.

Which mouse has the better shape for comfort?
