G5 and MX1000 Mouse

After much debate as to which mouse to get for my new system I've decided I want the G5 and the MX1000. I see the benefit in both devices, so I'm going to purchase them if they can coexist in peace on my computer.

I would hookup the MX1000 to a PS2 port and the G5 to a USB. I would like to use the MX1000 for everything other than gaming.

I'd setup the mouse software not to load at startup and manually start the SetPoint software for whichever device I would be using for that particular session. Knowing that Windows XP will load the drivers for both devices at startup I'm concerned this will cause a conflict. I'm also concerned that I won't be able to use the Setpoint software separately for each device on the same system.

If I hook up the devices as described above and keep one inactive while using the other will this work or will I have a problem?

Thanks,

Why hook the MX1000 to PS2? Just put them both on USB.

Also, forget all this driver conflict stuff. The driver can handle multiple mice at once, as far as I know.

I understand the MX1000 has a problem when run from a USB port. Don't know this to be a fact, but I read an article somewhere saying it hangs at times and doesn't run smoothly off of a USB.

Anyway, thanks for the input on the drivers. I was concerned about a conflict, so as long as I can run multiple mice on the same system I can go ahead with my idea.

Now, I wonder if I can set the Setpoint software to distinguish between the G5 and MX1000. Another words, can I have two installations of the software on one computer? One for each mouse and manually start the Setpoint software to recognize the specific mouse that I will be using at any given time. Being that I only play games on my computer a few times a week it's not a problem to reboot and load the Setpoint software for the G5 when I want to use it. I'm just not sure if I can install the Setpoint software in two different directories, one for each device, and have them not conflict in the registry. Will the software be able to recognize which mouse I want to use? Any idea?

Upon further research it seems the SetPoint software can handle multiple Logitech devices including two mice each having their own tab. This will work as long as the MX1000 can run off of a USB port without jumping or acting with erratic behavior. I found the following link on Logitech's site referring to this possibility.

They suggest using the PS2 port if this occurs. Does anyone run the MX1000 off of a USB port without any problems?

I run the MX1000 via ps2 port and a MX518 via usb w/out any issues. Very handy. I like the MX1000 for all of the assignable buttons and the MX518 is for gaming, adjustable sensitivity is very useful in FPS games. And yes the setpoint software can handle both at the same time, plus each can be customized to your liking.

I've run two mice before, no issues.

Only reason i didn't keep doing that was the difference in sensitivity.

Gets me all mixed up.

Excellent, I was hoping this would be the case. I think this is the best solution. I've seen much debate as to which mouse to get with each having it's own benefit, so why not have the best of both worlds. I've already placed my order for the G5 from Newegg and will be ordering the MX1000 tonight. Thanks for the input.
